Hunter's campaign was toast from the start.

Fred Thompson is second nationally in the polls, but a recent poll showed him tied with Romney in South Carolina.

The problem is that Iowa and New Hampshire are before South Carolina.

I don't see that a Romney win in Iowa and New Hampshire is necessarily a big problem for Fred Thompson, as long as he makes a respectable showing. There are a lot fewer Republicans who blindly and obediently vote the way they are told like there are Democrats.

Remember how the Democrats blindly swallowed Kerry last cycle because polls showed he could beat Bush? Then, once the campaign started, they found out they were selling a s*** sandwich.

I also don't see a race boiling down to Thompson and Romney as a bad thing. The best part of it would be putting Rudy out of the picture. You'd also be left with probably the two most electable guys in the race and a well-balanced ticket if either could shelve their ego and accept second spot.

Both are too middle of the road for me, but either would probably make a reasonably decent president.
