i personally know a Marine, who was "dragged out of his PU" in Rolling Meadows, IL & "beaten half to death" for just HAVING a 3" USMC sticker in the back window. (i KNOW. i was a former college "buddy" of his & went to see him in the hospital, after. btw, NOTHING was done to his "abusers". the PD officer at the ER said, "them's the breaks" & left.)
we GIs were even told to take the "post parking stickers" OFF our POVs to "blend in with the civilian vehicles" in late '74 at Ft Mead, MD.
imVho, we must ASSURE that vets/GIs are NEVER, EVER again treated as we "RVN era vets" WERE.

In 1974 I was TDY to Ft. Meade from FT. Eustis, then sent TDA to Naval Station Annapolis. Not any problems around the Academy. I did wonder why I didnt have to register my POV and get a sticker. Maybe one of the reasons I wasnt bothered much was that my duty uniform was civilian clothes, I had hair and didnt come near Ft. Meade.
Fortunately I was stationed in Hampton Roads before that - a hard core military area. At the time I thought Army, Navy and Air force out numbered the civilian population. Virginia Beach was full of hippies, but not enough anti-war or antimilitary freaks to notice.
The only thing I didn't like was the order that we weren't to travel in uniform.
