The CNN news story said they're Surinamese (Suriname -- formerly Dutch Guiana in South America). The population is quite a mix per Wikipedia: East Indians (37%), Creoles (31%), Javanese (15%), Maroons (10%), Amerindians (1%-3%), Chinese, Boeroes and Jews.
Because of the great number of ethnic groups in the country, there is no main religion. Christianity, both in the form of Roman Catholicism and variations of Protestantism, is dominant among Creoles and Maroons. Most of the Hindustani are Hindu, but they also practice Islam and Christianity. The Javanese also practice both Islam and Christianity. At 20% of the population, Suriname has the largest Muslim community by percentage in the New World.
From Wikipedia:
A Maroon (from the word marronage or American/Spanish cimarrón: "fugitive, runaway", lit. "living on mountaintops"; from Spanish cima: "top, summit") was a runaway slave in the West Indies, Central America, South America, or North America. Maroon populations are found in Jamaica, Amazon River Basin to the American states of Florida and North Carolina.
Bugs Bunny was a RACIST?
Thank you for your research and reply.
In the meantime, I did a little research also. Kalpoe appears be a Dutch surname. But the brothers are definitely a hodgepodge of cultures and religion.
As you correctly stated, Surinamese folks are quite a mixture of a lot of things...like street kitty cats.
The question remains for the future what is their religion?
Thank you again.
