Nativity scene causes protest A letter was filed with city to remove the nativity.

Posted: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 7:10 a.m.

MENOMINEE -- A Wisconsin-based group of atheists are protesting a decision by Menominee officials to allow a nativity scene on city property.

The nativity will be in the bandshell.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a letter with the city, saying the display would violate the separation of Church and State.

The Parks and Recreation Committe's approval of the bandshell display comes with the provision that non-Christians be allowed to add their symbols.

Nativity scene plans reconsidered After much controversy, plans for a nativity scene will be reconsidered. Posted: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at 7:27 a.m.

MENOMINEE -- City officals in Menominee will reconsider plans for their nativity scene this year after a complaint was filed against the annual tradition.

The Freedom from Religion Foundation, based in Madison, Wisconsin, sent the letter last week. The Foundation says the City-sponsored nativity scene that will be displayed in Menominee, violates the separation of Church and State.

In an effort to work out a suitable agreement, the city will now encourage other faiths to display their symbols at the city bandshell.

"I just sent a brief letter back, recommending that they wait until all the decorating is done, finished up before they, they take a look at it, before they make a decision as to whether it's appropriate or not," stated Eric Strah, Menominee City Manager.

The nativity scene will be located at the bandshell near the marina on 1st Street.

A public works crew will set it up after the Thanksgiving holiday.

"If they don’t believe in God why are they so offended?"

I believe athiests for the most part don't care what Christians or Jews do. There are a select few who like to see their names in print or their faces on the local TeeVee news and this is the ONLY way that will ever happen.

I agree to an extent that atheists don’t care what Christians or Jews do, but there is a growing movement of evangelical atheists that claim to be the only “intelligent” people and having all the answers as we believers in God have fallen for a fairy tale.

I hear you, maybe it is time for the offended to find a hobby. (Other then worrying about what your neighbors are doing)

However, many of them use the term “goodbye” which is a contraction of “God be with ye”. Hehehehehehehehehe

Well then that word must be scrubbed from the conscience. /s ;)

I do.......unfortunately there is a vocal minority of atheists that pulls this crapola....and gives the rest of us a bad rap.

It has to do with the fact that it’s on public property

It might matter if it is State property, City property, or Federal property. If it is State or City property the claim should be dismissed out of hand. If Federal property they need to go to the White House and protest the National Christmas tree ceremony and have Christmas undeclared a national holiday.

"The Freedom from Religion Foundation filed a letter with the city, saying the display would violate the separation of Church and State."

BS!

The Nativity scene does not violate: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,"

But you atheists are having the government violate: "Congress shall make no law... or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

Because they’re communists using atheism as a front.

Problem is, atheism is a religious belief. Removing all traces of religion is catering to that belief. I see that as a greater violation of the 1st amendment than multi-religous displays.

Getting worse. Saying “mother and father” is illegal in some areas. You can be arrested for drawing a picture of a noose. You lose your job for saying what you think, or repeating known facts.
Seems to me that everything that White Christian heterosexuals NORMALLY say and do is being criminalized!
Where has the country gone?

Why can’t atheists just ignore the nativities during Christmastime?

Because the child wasnt aborted.

This issue of religious symbols or speeach in government offices has already been decided on by the Supreme Court.

Any government can display religious signs or discuss religious idealogy whenever they want. It is a judgement call by city of states whether they cave in to political pressure or not. Our House of Representatives begins each day with the Pledge of Allegiance stating we are ‘one nation under God’. Get over it athiests, you already forced us many times to acknowledge you displeasure about a society under God. If you athiests are that displeased about nativity scenes, the easter bunny, wiccan symbols or a picture of muhammed on a government building lawn then I suggest you move to another country. I am Christian but even if I wasn’t, I would still respect the meaning of Christmas of good tidings to all men. Or the meaning of the ten commandments that respect for one’s neighbors and restraining selfishness that hurts other people and sets a standard is a GOOD thing for our society. GROW UP!

Wow, there is a Menominee, WI. I knew about the one ending in "ie", but not the one with the identical spelling.

Menominee, MI does have a band shell. At least it had one the last time I was there!
