Its my guess that she wasnt home. However, its not stupid to refuse the police access to your home when they ask. If they have a warrant its different but I would not let the police into my home otherwise.
It is not stupid if they are regular police, I agree with you. I would never let them in without a warrant.
It is stupid if it is a SWAT team that will break your door down and possibly shoot you, whether you invite then in or not.
