SWAT Unit Raids Wrong Home, Leaves Mess Behind

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. -- A SWAT team raids the wrong home in Lawrenceburg, Ind., now the homeowner wants some answers.

Police said they were led to the Village Apartments on the trail of fugitive Sean Deaton.

Convinced he was inside apartment 407G, the Lawrenceburg SWAT unit surrounded the building.

"It looked like they were ready to go to war," one neighbor said. "Some of the ones out here had AR15's and shotguns."

Neighbors said police spent hours, ordering Deaton to surrender. But when that didn't work, they responded with tear gas and forced entry.

"It looked like my apartment was on fire. The smoke was just blowing out of my windows," Kayla Irwin, the tenant of 407G said.

Irwin, a single mother of two, said she is unable to live in her apartment and didn’t even know the man police were searching for.

Now, she said, she has been left with the mess and no apology.

"It's all covered with poison. I don't know where to start over with two kids," said Irwin. "How do you start with replacing the items that your kids have had since the day they were born?"

She said one of her pet guinea pigs was also killed during the incident.

Neighbors said the police action was simply overkill.

"Overpowered. In my opinion it looked like they were enjoying what they were doing. They did not need to do all this," Emanuel Brightwell, an Iraq veteran and neighbor said.

Irwin said she appealed to the police, but hasn’t gotten anywhere.

"They basically just said, sorry for the inconvenience. Go ahead and clean it up. Clean up our mess," Irwin said.

She said she's had to borrow everything from family in the week since the incident. She also said she can't stay in the apartment because of the acrid gas residue.

An assistant chief and another officer were at the Village Apartments talking to Irwin within 30 minutes of Target 5 asking them about the incident, telling her that they would try to get some money so she could clean her clothes and furnishing on her own.

"This is the first time this has happened. I'm surprised the incident has not been remedied. We will take care of it the best we can," the assistant chief said.

Until the incident is remedied, the manager of the apartment complex said he has put Irwin, her kids and her pets in another apartment.

Good Lord man, what other side can there be? The JBTs raided the wrong house, destroying property and killing a family pet in the process.

The side that the police summarily dismissed her and offered no help. As I've said many times on this board:

There are three sides to every story: my side, your side, and the truth.

In my town SWAT team use seems more designed to impress, or perhaps intimidate, the citizenry than to actually catch criminals.

what if she was away, came home, and found her house surrounded? She could have offered to let them in, and they said “sorry, we can’t let you near the house, there’s a dangerous felon inside.” In fact, I bet that’s what happened.

The reward, of course, being the opportunity to kill peoples’ pets. They were surely disappointed that there was no dog to shoot and they had to settle for gassing a guinea pig.

Perhaps a primer on the Battle of Athens, Tennessee should be required reading for all LEOs.

fine. next time a wanted, convicted, armed felon storms into your daughters house to ellude capture, we'll just send you over there and not involve the police.

this type of scenario happens all the time. 99.9% turn out just fine. no one gets hurt. but you don't read about those incidents do you?

grab your ankles and kiss the media's butt for keeping you so informed about the evil police departments.

I think that is exactly what happened. Then they trashed her house and said “see ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya”.

So we should be thankful when the police are incompetent?

***“Something odd here”

I agree. That’s why I never get worked up over these types of stories. There are usually details that are convienently left out as to invoke outrage...and it seems to have succeeded.***

Agree. For instance, the woman said she didn’t even know the man. How do we (or the police) know she was telling the truth? Also, if she were truthful, that doesn’t mean the man wasn’t in her apartment. SOMETHING’S left out of this article. (As usual)

Umm, that's precisely what happened, in fact the apartment complex manager has moved the family to another unit until the JBTs can be made to be accoutable. You a cop or something?

my point is that the media is quick to side with the "victim" but fails to give the police equal time.

that's all i'm saying. there is always more to the story.

and yes. i am a cop.

Easy for someone to say who doesn’t put their life on the line bringing in the bad guys.

Maybe you should change that to voter who pays the damn bills. If you are one of those jerks get a new job!

Oh there's little doubt about that. Spec-Ops wannabes.

But there are circumstances when SWAT is needed given the danger of some criminals.

Then how did we get along without them for so long??

“Then how did we get along without them for so long??”

There weren’t police departments for a long time either. What a moronic statement.

Well, actually I can’t say that because now I recall the shoot out in LA (?) where the bad guys had body armor and automatic weapons, but that’s the only incident that comes to mind.

There was no swat there, it takes the play military boys about two hours to get on their play gear and another two hours for the circle jerk. Those clowns in la were taken down with some hunting rifle borrowed from a gun dealer, by some cops' with cojones.

“Try?” Why don’t the police ever seem to be held responsible for their actions? OK, mistakes will happen - maybe a little too often, it seems, but even in a perfect world they will happen. When the police make a mistake and bad things happen, though, why don’t they step up and take responsibility for what they’ve done? Oh, that’s right - we’re talking about police here, who apparently believe that the rest of exist to pay taxes and bow down in deference to them.
