BAGHDAD Nearly (100) Iraqi Correctional Officers (ICO) graduated from the Iraqi Correctional Officer Training Academy at a ceremony held here Nov. 8 at Camp Cropper.
The graduates first attended a rigorous eight-week basic training program held near Amman, Jordan, before attending a four-week Advanced Individual Training course at Camp Cropper. The ICO were then partnered with Coalition forces for on-the-job training and mentorship.
For some of the ICO, their next step will be the attendance of a two-week Non-Commissioned Officers Course, also held at Camp Cropper. This successful ICO/Coalition force relationship is moving the ICO program toward the transfer of authority and responsibility to the Government of Iraq.
The graduation ceremony was attended by Army Brig. Gen. Michael R. Nevin, commander of the 177th Military Police Brigade, and Lt. Col. James Gehring, commander of the 1-158 Cavalry, which oversees the ICO Training Academy at both Camp Cropper and Camp Bucca. The ceremony was also attended by Warden Col. Qasim Abd-Al-Hussein, the Director of Camp Cropper, and Assistant-Warden 1st Lt Fadhil Aziz, the Commander of the ICO C Group.
While attending training and working in the Theater Internment Facility, ICO live in the Haider SalmanVillage, named in honor of an ICO killed in June, when a mortar struck his home. Haider Salman completed the Advanced Individual Training Course and was known to be one of the best ICO working in the Theater Internment Facility.
The village is a private housing area where ICO staff can stay throughout their work week. It provides a safe place of residence where they can live undisturbed; there are many amenities such as air conditioning, a soccer field and a new dining hall where ICO are served culturally specific meals four times a day.
The ICO work side-by-side with U.S. military members at Camp Cropper. They make up a highly trained guard force that provides care and custody services for the nearly (4,000) security internees detained at Camp Cropper.
