RICHMOND, Va. - Former GOP Gov. Jim Gilmore announced Monday that he will seek the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Republican John Warner.
Gilmore's announcement sets up a campaign with another former governor, Democrat Mark R. Warner — a clash between two men with vastly different views about government and little affection for the other.
Mark Warner announced his intent to run for the seat in September and raised more than $1.1 million in just 17 days.
Gilmore’s got himself an uphill fight. Warner is very popular—why, I have NO idea, but he is.

Gilmore is going to work very hard to get this seat. I pray that he can.
What? Doesn’t he know he’s entering the race late? Has he purposefully done this to avoid debates? I bet he has a trophy wife too!
He better have a lot of fire in the belly to even have a chance of beating Warner.
Wow, hope Gilmore wins the seat. Warner is a useless piece of junk. When we lived in Virginia I frequently emailed him over our dislike of the way he handled various bills. He is the reason Ollie North did not win. Actually wish Ollie North would run again. Gilmore was a so, so govenor but believe he will be a better Senator than Warner ever was.
If Gilmore has any sense, his constant attack will be how many miles of interstate did Warner improve and widen, then attack him every day about illegals and kick backs to the demorat party from everyone that has received tobacco development money. But of course he will not do it.
It’s not late for a state race, we had county elections this year.
Gilmore got the Governor’s job on one hot issue of the time - an outrageous car tax that was costing over a thousand dollars a year for new cars. Virginian’s were just sick of it.
Now, the majority of Virginian’s are sick of the illegal alien invasion. If Gilmore makes that his central campaign issue, he will beat Mark Warner. He will even do well in purple northern Virginia, where the outer suburbs are most infected by the illegals. Of course, Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax county are Baja Massachusetts and lost causes, but they can be overcome if he addresses the illegals.
I also hope Gilmore can ‘get it done’. He’s going to need asbestos underwear, a backbone of steel, and a very smart, aggressive campaign. Warner is going to ‘macaca’ Gilmore from the ‘get go’ with the car tax crap ..... he fired the first stink bomb months ago in the press release to announce he was seeking the Senate seat. Warner was bragging on cleaning up Gilmore’s car tax mess after he took office so the handwriting is already on the wall as to what his tactics will be. The thought of an M.Warner/Webb combo representing VA makes me sick.
