Pressure mounts to pardon Border agents

Top conservatives have joined ranking House leaders in their bid to pressure the president to pardon two jailed El Paso Border Patrol agents for the nonfatal shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler in 2005.

In a letter to be delivered tomorrow to the White House, 31 major conservative petitioners joined a campaign being led by Rep. Duncan Hunter, California Republican and presidential candidate, to ask President Bush to pardon Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean before Thanksgiving.

The letter comes on the heels of the arrest of admitted drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila on charges of trafficking marijuana while he was profiting from the federal-immunity deal as the star witness in the shooting case against the agents.

"History has proven that the mere words and deeds of a president can change the course of history and profoundly affect both the tone and direction of the nation"s moral character for generations to come," said the letter signed by 31 petitioners, mostly from Christian conservative groups and national security organizations.

"The impact of a president"s silence can have the same dramatic and devastating results. That is why we find your continued silence on the issue of a presidential pardon for Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean of great concern," it said.

...Aldrete-Davila has entered hospitals in El Paso under federal escort since the October 2006 sentencing of the former agents, eyewitnesses close to the case told The Washington Times.

On Nov. 8, Mr. Aldrete-Davila was at a hospital in El Paso for a pre-operative appointment for surgery, the eyewitness source said. That source and other El Paso sources have told The Times that the U.S. government has been paying for his medical bills.

Federal authorities, however, denied that Mr. Aldrete-Davila had entered the U.S. under federal escort several times for medical treatment.

Other BP agents have also been framed. This is evil.

Banned or suspended for being a staunch supporter of Rep. Duncan Hunter, the best conservative candidate for POTUS.

“I’d be happy to have a real conservative president for a change.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a REAL conservative president.

I too am proud to support this Man, Mr. Hunter. I cannot see another person more capable, than this Man, in the office of President...except Former President Ronald Reagan. I miss our Former President. His words always made the world sit up and know America was not to be trifled with. The world quaked, with fear, each time Former President Reagan came to the microphone. Iran let our hostages leave. Nations respected America. For our President Ronald Reagan would have beat them senseless and the world knew it. I consider and believe Mr. Hunter is the first to come onto the scene and run for President of the United State, since Former President Reagan, with all the qualities necessary to lead this Nation through the troubled time ahead. Our Nation is under siege. I miss our Former President. So I will vote for this Man (Mr. Hunter), who has the qualities of our Former President. I believe him and I trust him. Mr. Hunter has a record of consistent Conservatism. Mr. Hunter is the only Man for this tremendous job.....mho

Who do you trust to help the Border Patrol. I trust Mr. Duncan Hunter. I cannot help myself. I believe in this Man.

The stubborn President Bush would rather pardon a White House Turkey than these two heroes.

But I pray for President Bush.

I sincerely pray that God touches our President, granting him a merciful spirit of pardon for Ramos and Compeon. In his name, I pray..Amen.

Sir...you do realize Former President Ronald Reagan held the rank of Captain in this Nation Military during or shortly after WWII?

America needs another Captain as Commander-in-Chief. I am not attempting to offend you, I am only pointing out a fact. I support Mr. Hunter not because he was a Captain in our Nation's Military, no, I support Mr. Hunter because of his record as a human being.

I realize McCain held rank too....but I cannot trust John McCain. McCain's record in our Nation's Congress has not been stellar Conservatism, as Mr. Hunter's record has.

Again, I am not attempting to offend you....and I realize your post was not to me. If you happen to be offended, then I request you look at the Congressional Record of Mr. Duncan Hunter. Mr. Hunter is a true Conservative who refuses to hide the facts and his record, just as Former President Reagan refused to hide the facts and his record....

I believe this is why Hollywood loathed Former President Reagan, just as I believe now, Hollywood loathes Mr. Duncan Hunter.....mho

"It's the guy's like "dit xi" who think that the words "airborne" and "Ranger" automatically makes your breath smell better, raises your I.Q. by twenty points, and makes you devastatingly attractive to women and "real conservative" primary voters, who don't understand

That's just your biased misperception, my FRiend. I'm merely pointing out Duncan Hunter's patriotism, heroism, and commitment to our country, characteristics which are much lacking in the other phoney candidates.

Does anyone beieve that Aldrete-Davila, a Mexican banger, while transporting hundreds of dollars of weed was unarmed as the prosecution claimed?

Ramos and Campeon need to be realeased.

You say other “BP agents”, plural, have been framed. Ignoring the “framed” part for a moment, can you name TWO other BP agents that have been prosecuted by Sutton? I can think of one, Sipes.

What makes my blood boil even more is that we're paying for this scumbag's medical bills so that he can smuggle more drugs across the border and poison our neighborhoods.

First of all, let me (in the immortal words of Dick Nixon) make one thing perfectly clear. I have no problems at all with Duncan Hunter's message. I just don't think he's the most effective messenger this year, and I believe that his candidacy, along with the other "second tier" candidates may be making it difficult for other genuinely conservative voices to be heard in the great debate of sound bites; and I don't like the tactics of some of his supporters here at FR.

If you've ever seen the movie, "Casablanca", I would call your attention to the scene in which Peter Lorre's character says something to this effect to Bogart's Rick: "You don't like me very much, do you, Rick?". To which Bogart's "Rick" says "If I thought about you that much, I probably wouldn't like you" (or words to that effect). If "Hollywood" thought that Hunter was that much of a threat, they probably would "despise" him, but I just don't believe that they see him that way.

No offense FRiend, but should Mr. Hunter come close to attaining the Presidency, watch for Hollywood to go ballistic. Maybe Hollywood has already gone ballistic and offered their own candidate? Who knows?

If you are offended, offending you was not my intent. My intent in posting is to (hopefully) cause each and ever one of us to think, just as I am certain each of your posts are posted for also.

I'm sure you're right about Hunter's positives, but it's a bit late to expect the other conservative candidates (i.e. those who might actually have a shot at the Presidency based on less demanding qualities like "personability", empathy and "the common touch") to enroll in the non-Resident Ranger course (if there were such a thing). :)
