Romney Calls Attacks on His Faith Un-American

Mitt Romney called attempts to undermine him by questioning his Mormon faith "un-American" as he spoke to reporters in Nevada yesterday. Romney was specifically responding to reported "push-poll" phone calls being made in Iowa and New Hampshire, in which the calls reportedly begin as opinion polls but turn into statements and questions designed to highlight and cast doubt on Romney's Mormon faith. Here is what Romney had to say.....(Video)

Every denomination believes that they are right and others are wrong in some respect. So what? Mormons have very good relations with Catholics. Mormons often invite Catholic leaders to their conferences and give them special seating. Mormons funnel their assistance to many parts of the world through Catholic agencies. While Mormons and Catholics differ on some doctrines, they find that their values have much in common.

I’m not Catholic, I really wanted to know if as a Catholic you were telling us what your faith and the Vatican says about Mormonism. It sounded in your post as though the Pope accepts mormons as Christians.

If Romney would keep it at, "I'm a Mormon, and my faith is none of your business", then he's on solid ground, and he can win my vote.

But he and his supporters keep pushing it to, "I'm a Mormon, which is a type of Christianity, and my faith is none of your business". This is a deal-breaker for millions of people. I haven't sen where his supporters are saying the latter. I've been on the tour in SLC and the "guide" says this because they follow both the Old and new testaments. If YOU have a problem then you are certainly free to vote based on that and the candidates have a right to run on that if that is their belief.

I think this is the issue. I would have a problem with a candidate who is radical Islam and have no problem saying that. As far as I can see no candidate is saying that they can't condone a Mormon publically.

If someone has a religious litmus test then just state it.

You are probably right. That will be a deal breaker for many.
But I also think it is true the issue keeps coming up, not because Mormons bring it up, but because others seem under some self obligation to go out of their way to remind Mormons that they are not Christian. That has been my observation on FR. It is like going to someone and saying, “Look, we can work together, but only if you will first admit that you are ugly.”

Then those who are opposed to him should address his politics rather than his religious beliefs.
