Mitt Romney called attempts to undermine him by questioning his Mormon faith "un-American" as he spoke to reporters in Nevada yesterday. Romney was specifically responding to reported "push-poll" phone calls being made in Iowa and New Hampshire, in which the calls reportedly begin as opinion polls but turn into statements and questions designed to highlight and cast doubt on Romney's Mormon faith. Here is what Romney had to say.....(Video)

~I think all the candidates feet should be held to the fire on religious questions, not just Romney.~
[Im encouraged to see that. Unfortunately, that is not what were seeing. The double standard is pervasive.]
For example, John Kerry should have been creamed on being a pro-abort Catholic, but only a little was made of it. Hillary should be held account too.
Voters have the right to have answers about any candidate’s faith; and it may relate to their conduct in office.
What’s the big deal? Romney can speak about his if faith if he wishes.
If he tries to hide it because it makes voters uncomfortable as voters learn about his faith, then so be it.
Exactly. That’s how it works in this country.
That's not what my mom used say....
"Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn't make it right!!"
LOL!!
And Fred Thompson too, I presume?
I do believe that he is a Restorationist, on those rare occasions that he attends church. Yet I don’t see you and others calling him out on his rejection of mainstream Christianity.
So, you may understand my confusion on this matter.
Now THAT...is one tall promise. You claim to know all Mormon's?
FOUR "I's" in that sequence too. lol!!
Tant, you are one dude that is extremely full of himself.
~”I do not believe the American Christian conservative voters will enthusiastically support a Mormon ... yet.”~
I don’t agree with the premise, of course; but your inclusion of the word “yet” greatly piqued my interest. Would you mind elaborating?
Perhaps your confusion is as willful as your claims that the Church suppressed other books like the Gospel of Thomas when setting the canon and therefore the Bible is not complete as God wanted it.
I’ll do it privately, but not on this open forum because it will be offensive to Mormons, the individuals.
~”Now THAT...is one tall promise. You claim to know all Mormon’s?”~
Nope. Keep reading.
~”Tant, you are one dude that is extremely full of himself.”~
Could be. People only generally think that I’m arrogant once they get to know me, though, so it works out.
Being a classical INTJ personality type, confidence in my opinions comes naturally to me. It often rubs others the wrong way; c’est la vie.
I helps, though, that I usually turn out to be right. :-)
Agreed.
And if the Romney supporters don't understand that the Dems will peel the layers off that...they are kidding themselves.
~”Perhaps your confusion is as willful as your claims that the Church suppressed other books like the Gospel of Thomas when setting the canon and therefore the Bible is not complete as God wanted it.”~
I never made such claims. Perhaps you are confusing posters?
Fair enough. I look forward to it.
I've googled some other sites, (which considering how search engines operate isn't the best method to seek unbiased truth), but on some they indicate all the opponents to Romney deny association with the reported push-poll. Some have linked the phone number to the Tarrance Group, which was associated with Giuliani, but his campaign denies any such poll from their camp.
Similar searches on Vivisimo yields:

CNS yields New Hampshire AG was investigating the McCain camp based upon charges by Romney camp of similar push polls in NH and reported the calls had originated from a Utah based Western Wats, which denies ever making the calls.
National Review's Kudlow postures: "I asked Romney what he thought of a push-poll that emphasizes the positives of his Republican presidential rival, John McCain. I also asked him what he thought of Sen. McCains 95-year-old mother blaming Mormons for the problems surrounding the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. Is there a pattern? Is this a McCain-organized assault?"
So is that little quip a push-poll by a journalist investigating the push-poll?/aside
The pollster.com site has a nice article by Marc Blumenthal but touches upon accusations by Democrats of push-calls by Obama's campaign against Hillary and Edwards (go figure).
After reading the above links it appears that within a week of one of these events, all the other candidates are wrapped up in similar attacks or staged attacks, where the response may be just as reversible of consequence as the apparant initial attack,...so in the long run they appear to be easily contrived by any party just to stir the pot.
IMHO, all the pot stirring has simply allowed the foolish to better express their foolhardiness and those who remained quiet now appear as culpable as others. IMHO, I wouldn't be surprised if the entire affair wasn't initiated by some well known democratic socialists feeling left out of the limelight.
Very good pick-up. I noticed this exact thing to the point that when an LDS poster accused several of us as having the orientation to have made these calls ourselves (he said, had we the $), he pinpointed three of us. My response?
(Oh, and just so you can properly sensitize us as to which LDS subjects are meant to be off limits, which of the sub-topics raised by these calls most offended you? Just bringing up the Book of Mormon? The ban on black bishops? Or baptizing dead folks? Golly Gee, maybe you should encourage LDS HQ to send out a press release that any discussion on these topics is offensive to Mormons)
I mean if just raising the issues of the Book of Mormon, a "ban on black bishops," and baptizing dead folks is so offensive to Mitt & to LDS, what would happen once the MSM gets beyond such relatively benign topics?
Nope. Keep reading.
That's not what you said...up above. So which is it?
~Tant, you are one dude that is extremely full of himself.~
Could be. People only generally think that Im arrogant once they get to know me, though, so it works out.
Based on your postings here on FR. You are. You certainly come across that way...anyway.
Being a classical INTJ personality type, confidence in my opinions comes naturally to me. It often rubs others the wrong way; cest la vie.
Confidence in one's opinions...is one thing. Diplomacy is another skill-set...you need remedial help in.
I helps, though, that I usually turn out to be right. :-)
LOL!!...yeah, keep telling yourself that.
You guy's absolutely crack me up.
I believe I made that point in an earlier post.
I asked you Are you joining the posters who claim that any question about the religion is an attack? Your answer," No. BUT the attempt to use religious creed against a political candidate, thereby necessitating the presentation of said creed in a negative light, is an attack on that creed" isn't convincing to me, I'm afraid.
Perhaps you are not aware of this: From Boston.com, November 27, 2006
Does Tompkins hire for Romney forecast SC showdown?
Governor Mitt Romney announced today that Warren Tompkins, a veteran South Carolina political strategist, has joined his Commonwealth PAC as a senior adviser for the Southeast. The Globe reported earlier this month that Romney, who's preparing for a 2008 presidential run, was in talks with Tompkins, but yesterday's announcement makes it official.
Curiously, though, the press release issued by the PAC omits perhaps the most relevant chapter of Tompkins' long resume: His involvement in President Bush's bruising victory over Arizona Senator John McCain in the 2000 South Carolina presidential primary. As Bush's Southeast regional director, Tompkins helped engineer attacks against McCain that helped end his candidacy. Does Romney's hiring of Tompkins for 2008 mean we'll see a 2000 redux?
Does Tompkins hire for Romney forecast SC showdown?
Those attacks were the infamous push polls in which the "pollsters" asked McCain supporters if they would be more or less likely to vote for McCain if they knew he had fathered an illegitimate child who was black. In the conservative, race-conscious South, that's not a minor charge.
Would you call what Tompkins did in South Carolina "Un-American"? Are you even aware that Tompkins is on Mitt's payroll? There are a LOT of people making the connection to this poll.
If we had the $ (I wish) we could have done a MUCH neater job, ya’ think? I missed the post where the “three” were named..who were they?
I had not yet considered that this poll maybe a DNC exploratory foray. Thanks
