‘Turkey is an avowedly secular country’ — you forgot the part about that they recently elected a very conservative, pro-sharia law person, they are killing/ bombing/ torturing and killing/ etc. Christians in Istanbul, the women are very heavily ‘bagged’ in that country, etc. I have a Turkish friend,Christian, recent immigrant here. “You do NOT want to be in an Islamic country,” she said.
Not really. The prime minister they elected, while more religious, is not pro-Sharia by any means. Per public polls, over 90% of Turks oppose implementing any form of Sharia law.
the women are very heavily bagged in that country
No, they're not. Ever been to Istanbul? To the Mediterrean coastal resorts in Antalya, Marmaris? Half the women on those beaches are topless. Granted, the eastern part of the nation is more conservative and some women do cover their hair with headscarves, but rarely will you see Turkish women cover their faces like in Afghanistan.
And Turkey by no means requires women to cover up - in fact, they have strict laws banning wearing headscarves in public buildings and schools.
