Today President Bush welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda to the White House. This was the prime ministers first official trip since taking office in September: I have come to this one and only ally for Japan, the United States of America.
After meeting in the Oval Office, the prime minister and the president made a joint statement to the press which covered topics such as North Korea, Iran and the War on Terror. (Transcript)
Prime Minister Fukuda later visited Arlington National Cemetery, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and wreaths at the graves of recent fallen warriors who had fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. (Prime Minister Fukuda may be a liberal Democrat where he comes from, but in one visit to the US, hes already shown more respect for the troops than all of our liberal Democrats combined.)
Vice President Cheney attended a Republican fundraiser in Little Rock, Arkansas.
First Lady Laura Bush spoke at the Fourth Annual Preserve America History Teacher of the Year Award Ceremony this morning in New York. (Transcript)
Mrs. Bush returned to the White House this afternoon, joining President Bush as they spoke about National Adoption Day. (Transcript)

Quote of the Day:
President Bush: (in his remarks about National Adoption Day) It is fitting that we celebrate this day in a room honoring George Washington, or as some like to say, the original "George W." (Laughter and applause.) There he is. He raised four children who were not his by birth. He cared for them, provided for them, and he offered them advice -- even when they didn't want it. (Laughter.)When one of his boys went off to college, Washington did what many parents do -- he checked up on him. And in 1798, he sent the young man a letter. It said: "I have, with much surprise, been informed of your devoting much time to a certain young lady." And he went on to advise that "your application to books is not [what] it ought to be." Well, some parents here today may be able to relate to this. It's probably hard to believe, but there was even a time when my Dad -- (laughter) -- felt compelled to write such a letter. (Laughter.)

President Bush: Mr. Prime Minister, welcome to the White House. I really appreciate the opportunity to get to know you better. I'm looking forward to our lunch. This is an important visit. It's the first visit the Prime Minister has taken since he has assumed his important office. It's a recognition that our alliance is vital for peace and security. The alliance between our two countries is rooted deeply in our strong commitments to freedom and democracy. The Prime Minister and I are going to keep it that way. One of the things we've decided to do is to continue to make sure the U.S.-Japanese relationship is the cornerstone of security and peace. And I appreciate you being here.
