But in this case we're not just talking about small donations from miscellaneous loons. Stormfront.org runs a Ron Paul banner ad on every page. Meanwhile, Stormfront promotes a white supremacist platform directly in opposition to the libertarian core principles Paul putatively supports.
And a $500 donation from Stormfront's founder, Don Black, obviously a prominent neonazi, but also a felon, having done three years for attempting to overthrow the government of Dominica along with a handful of fellow Klansmen.
A campaign can't possibly vet contributions like this, but when it's brought to their attention, you explain you didn't know, don't want the suupport, and return it. It's simple.
That is not my idea of Libertarians. I thought they agreed with “free association” of people as long as they did not use force to promote their ideas. Sorta of like the ACLU went to court to fight for the right of the KKK to stage a “peaceful” march in Skokie (sp?) IL.
I saw Ron Paul on an interview and he claimed that he has never called a supporter and asked for a donation. “He is just not comfortable with doing that.” He said that most of his fund raising has been done through direct mail. He presents his ideas and if you agree with them, you can contribute to his campaign and support his ideas, not your ideals.
Since he has not personally requested funds from any person or group, he is not beholden to any person or group in any way. All of his funds have come from people, who have voluntarily contributed to his campaign. To make a big &*$# deal out of a $500 contribution from a wacko and ignore almost all of the other candidates actively, personally soliciting funds from people which, however marginally, puts them in a situation of owing those people something is ridiculous.
If Ron Paul would win the election, he would be the first candidate in many, many years who owes nothing to anybody. No PAC’s, no bundlers, etc. just the average American people, most of which contributed a small amount of money.
His campaign is not very aggressive in trying to raising campaign funds. If you sign up for e-mails from his campaign, you get like two fund raising e-mails a month, and they are very low keyed.
