WASHINGTON, Nov. 15, 2007 There is no wiggle room in the Defense Department budget, and Congress must pass the emergency supplemental spending bill as soon as possible to avoid halting operations and furloughing civilian employees, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said today. ![]()
During a Pentagon news conference, Gates reinforced the message he delivered to Congress yesterday, when he and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Capitol Hill and briefed members of both houses. |
“Furloughs, Closings Possible Without Supplemental Funding, Gates Warns”
Fire the non-volunteers over at The State Department.
Hire pro-American citizens as replacements (much lower costs at
those lower senority levels).
Divert what’s left over to DOD.
“This would result in the furloughing of about 100,000 government employees and a like number of contractor employees at Army bases.”
A lot of bloat there...
The path we believe is least undesirable fiscally and militarily would involve the following: The military would cease operations at all Army bases by mid-February next year, he said. This would result in the furloughing of about 100,000 government employees and a like number of contractor employees at Army bases.
These layoffs would have a cascading effect on depots and procurement, he continued. Similar actions would follow for the Marine Corps about a month later.
That's not what I'd call "BLOAT."
Come now...A little over the top....There will be money for operations....don’t buy the spin from either side... and yes, a lot of Govt. Employee/contractor bloat....
When I and several other Arizona FReepers a laid off, building what the troops need to carry on the fight I’ll be sure to remind you of your words.
Don’t take things so personal...Anecdotal evidence, is just that....
I do take it personal, as what I make is going to my younger brothers and sisters by another mother that followed me in uniform to help keep them alive and win the battle.
okay...I’ll sleep better at night...
And where is your "evidence"? It looks like it's not so much anecdotal as conjectural.
Yea there is some bloat, civil service especially. But it's the nature of the beast and the system is structurally incapable of cutting the bloat *before* they cut muscle and sinew. Most corporations are too, BTW. Been there seen that, from both "outside" and "inside" contractor perspectives as well as uniformed military perspective. Hasn't changed much in the last 34 years. And it's the ambitious, not the lazy, that are gumming up the works.
I hope like crazy that the Dems aren’t short sighted and stupid enough to do this. But, if it comes to this, I hope the first closures are in Harry Reid’s state and Nancy Pelosi’s district. Nevada’s got a lot of bases and San Fran has Naval facilities, which would equal a lot of constituent pressure pronto, and not the sort that would be forgotten by his next election. “You’ve been furloughed. Thank Harry Reid.”
There are more than 20,000 Cols, LtCols & Majors who are doing nothing but writing reports and make work currently on the Army books.. Retire them... Do not replace them, leaving will improve the efficiency of the Army..
It is not either or.. Fight the WOT smart don’t waste our best first line weapons platforms on a third rate enemy. Stop using $100,000 smart bombs to kill 3 stupid Islamofacists hiding behind a car when a battery of 155s will do swimmingly. Winning the war also includes preserving our National resources both human and monetary.
