hidden inside a snow-covered hillside in the Penza region of central Russia.

This is already the middle of Nowhere. Now they are holed up in a cave in the middle of Nowhere. If Doomsday happens, when would they find out about it? Never?

"Many Russians have refused new passports and taxpayers' personal identification numbers, saying the figures contained "satanic" combinations of numbers."

Well, they're right about that!

UPDATE:

Sect Waiting Out Doomsday in Penza Cave

Sect Waiting Out Doomsday in Penza Cave

Twenty-nine members of a religious doomsday sect, including a 16-month-old baby, are hiding in a snow-covered cave in the Penza region, refusing to come out as they wait for the end of the world next May, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The sect members, who liken tax identification numbers to the apocalyptic sign of the beast, are threatening to blow themselves up if authorities storm the cave, located near the village of Nikolskoye, 100 kilometers southeast of Penza, regional prosecutor's office spokeswoman Tatyana Ostrovskaya said by telephone.

The leader of the sect was not in the cave, national media reported.

Steam could be seen rising from a hole in thick snow in footage shown Wednesday on NTV television. Police are guarding the cave to prevent anyone else from joining them, Ostrovskaya said.

Authorities estimate that the zealots have been in the cave for two weeks, prompting concerns for the health of the four children hiding out. Attempts to coax them out of the cave or at least to release the children have been unsuccessful as the sect members have taken a vow of silence, Ostrovskaya said.

"They are ordinary Christians," Father Georgy, a local priest, told NTV while standing near the cave. "They just don't accept [tax identification numbers] and passports. They say the church did this and that wrong and that the end of the world is near."

Gunshots were fired into the air from the cave when Father Georgy and police tried to approach, NTV reported.

The government and the Russian Orthodox Church have complained repeatedly about the rise of sects since the fall of the Soviet Union. The opening of the Iron Curtain provided a hospitable climate for religious movements such as the Moonies and the Scientologists.

The messianic Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo, which released anthrax in Tokyo in 1993 and Sarin gas on the Tokyo subway in 1995, recruited hundreds of people across Russia and sought to acquire various weapons in Russia. The cult actively recruited top Russian scientists and technical experts in order to develop weapons of mass destruction, according to a 1995 U.S. Senate report.

A former traffic cop who claims he is Jesus is the spiritual leader of some 5,000 disciples in Siberia.

The sect members in the Penza cave are followers of 43-year-old Pyotr Kuznetsov, who moved to Nikolskoye last year claiming to head up the true Russian Orthodox Church, said Alevtina Volchkova, chief prosecutor of the region's Bekovsky district, where the village is located, the Regnum news agency reported.

"They say the current Russian Orthodox Church is commercialized," Volchkova was quoted as saying. "The church has its own tax code and carries out commercial activities, so [the sect claims to] represent the real Russian Orthodox Church."

Dozens of people from across the nation and from former Soviet republics came to the village to join the group, Ostrovskaya said.

"They came, they came, they came," elderly Nikolskoye resident Galina Chepurnova told Rossia television Wednesday. "They sang, they sang, they sang."

Last year the group built a prayer house in Nikolskoye, and several months ago members began preparing the cave 500 meters outside the village, national media reported. Members began storing enough petrol, kerosene and food to last until May, and before moving in, they expanded the cave and reinforced the roof, she said.

"Their leader -- or Father Pyotr, as they call him -- says their supplies include a half a ton of honey and a lot of jam," Volchkova told Regnum.

Followers did not work, children in the sect were not allowed to go to school, and members were banned from speaking to their relatives, NTV reported.

When the group disappeared from the area, "we thought they had gone away. But it seems they didn't," Volchkova said in televised comments.

Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation in connection with the formation of an illegal sect, a crime punishable by up to three years in prison.

The hideaway was only discovered when the daughter of one of the sect members turned up in Nikolskoye, and Kuznetsov -- who did not go into the cave himself -- squealed under pressure from investigators, Izvestia reported Wednesday.

"He said they should not be disturbed, that they are chosen ones and nobody else is allowed to get in the cave," a law enforcement source told Izvestia.

Kuznetsov's whereabouts were unknown as of Wednesday, NTV reported.

Archbishop Filaret of the Penza and Kuznetsk dioceses said in a statement published on the regional government's web site that he was "deeply grieved" to hear that "a group of people who are outside the church of God ... are preparing themselves for the second coming of Christ."

Ostrovskaya refused to say if there was any plan to storm the cave, and the Interior Ministry's Penza region branch referred all questions to prosecutors.

RussiaToday Features Russian cult goes underground to await apocalypse
Almost 30 Russians from the Penza region have decided to live underground because they believe the end of the world is nigh. They are all members of a cult called the True Russian Orthodox Church.

The cult members say the world will come to an end in six months time.

The authorities have tried to evict them from the caves they're living in, but the group members say they'll burn themselves alive rather than allow that to happen.

Undaunted, the local authorities are trying legal means. They've issued warrants against the cult saying they are living in their caves without the proper legal documents.

“These people have caught the attention of law-enforcement authorities when they began living without passports. Police checked all of them and prepared all the necessary documents. That was going on during September and October. After that they disappeared and we thought they just moved. But it turns out they didn't,” says prosecutor Valentina Volchkova.

************************************************************

From the article:

"These people have caught the attention of law-enforcement authorities when they began living without passports."

I suppose, then, that law enforcement wouldn't have minded if thirty people with proper passports had gone into a cave with children and had threatened to blow themselves up if disturbed before the Apocalypse.

Communism dies very slowly....the primary concern is not the welfare of the people but in whether or not The State has had an opportunity to properly document them.

This story reminds me of a D&D session I once had...

DM: “You enter what looks like a magician’s laboratory. You see a lot of beakers, glass instruments containing other liquids, bunsen burners, etc.”

Gamer 1: “I turn one of the burners off.”

Gamer 2 (who is with Gamer 1, and who is apparently using his brain): “No!!!!”

DM (asking Gamer 1): “You turn a burner off?”

Gamer 1: “Uh, sure.”

DM (talking to Gamers 3-xx): “Okay, this is what you hear: ‘thump, thump, boom—no, wait: BOOM! thump! thump!”

I could have choked him that day...

MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Members of a Russian doomsday cult barricaded themselves in a cave to wait out the end of the world as the cult's leader underwent psychiatric exams Thursday, Russian media reported.

art.church.russia.tv.jpg

The cult, which calls itself the "true Russian Orthodox Church," believes the world will end in May.

The cult leader is in police custody awaiting proceedings on charges that he set up an organization "whose activity is associated with violence on citizens and instigation to refuse to perform their civil duties," according to the state-funded Itar-Tass news agency.

Four children are among 29 cult members holed up in a ravine in Russia's Penza region, where they apparently dug a cave.

One of the children in the cave is 18 months old, reported Itar-Tass. Temperatures in the cave are below 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 degrees Celsius), the Russian news agency reported.

The cult members have refused law enforcement requests to come out or release the children, and they have threatened to commit suicide if police resort to force, according to Russian state television.

The cult, which calls itself the "true Russian Orthodox Church," believes the end of the world will come in May 2008.

Prosecutors announced Thursday they are opening criminal proceedings against the cult's leader, Father Pyotr Kuznetsov. Kuznetsov, 43, is "under the supervision of investigators," Olig Troshin, a Penza prosecutor, told Itar-Tass.

A law enforcement source in Penza told the Russian news agency Interfax that Kuznetsov "is being examined by psychiatrists."

Several clergymen, police officers and agents of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations are outside the cave.

"It is obviously some kind of insanity," Mitropolitan Kirill, a high-ranking Russian Orthodox Church official, told Russian television. "It is perhaps even a medical case. A very dangerous phenomena is happening in Russia's religious life."

He added, "What we're seeing in Penza right now is a most vivid example of what could happen to a country, to a society, if this society is deprived of proper religious education."

ITAR-TASS

Criminal proceedings opened against Penza sect leader

15.11.2007, 18.30

MOSCOW, November 15 (Itar-Tass) - Prosecutors in the Penza region opened criminal proceedings against sect leader Pyotr Kuznetsov whose supporters had holed up in a gully and refuse to talk with authorities.

Kuznetsov is "under the supervision of investigators," head of the regional investigations department under the Prosecutor General's Office Oleg Troshin told Itar-Tass.

"He's under our supervision; a criminal case has been opened against him under Article 239 of Russia’s Criminal Code (setting up a religious or public organization whose activity is associated with violence on citizens and instigation to refuse to perform their civil duties," Troshin said.

Investigators "haven't ascertained the motives of this move by the sect members who call themselves representatives of "the true Russian Orthodox Church."

They refuse contact with the regional authorities or law-enforcers. On the slope of the gully where some 30 sect members, including four children, dug out a cave and barricaded themselves, a detail of police officers has been on round-the-clock watch.

Police said the sect is awaiting "doomsday." They have a stock of food, and warned the authorities that in case police made an attempt to force their way inside, they would blow up their tunnels with the gas containers they had stored.

The temperature in caves does not exceed 12 degrees Celsius. The youngest child kept by the sect is just 18 months old.

Father Pyotr, 43, did not let his followers watch television, listen to the radio, or touch money, prosecutors said.

He is to undergo a psychiatric expert examination. The sect leader may be fined 200,000 roubles or sentenced to there years in jail.

They only have 3.5 years to wait.
We learn now from the Bible that the Rapture will be May 21th 2011 AD.
Five month’s* after, the Ultimate Terror: Judgment Day Oktober 21th 2011 AD
* And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man. (Revelation 9:5)

The Bible is a Book that is absolutely true and trustworthy. It is the centerpiece, the keystone of this study.

Russia: cultists brick themselves up to survive apocalypse

By IE
Wednesday November 21, 02:43 AM
About 30 doomsday cultists, including four children, have bricked themselves up in a dugout in the village of Poganovka, in Russia's Penza Region, to survive an oncoming apocalypse. They have threatened to blow themselves up if they are forced to get out of the cave.

The cultists claim to be the "True Russian Orthodox Church", and believe the apocalypse will come in May 2008. Police authorities have cordoned off the dugout fearing more cultists may join them in the coming weeks. Armed with gas-cylinders, the cultists have warned that they would rather die in a blast than leave their shelters. According to reports, the cultists excavated the cave after their leader; one Father Pyotr Kuznetsov ordered them to hide in order to escape the end of the world, which he predicted will happen next May. They took their children, the youngest being sixteen months of age, underground, too.

Kuznetsov's followers are from Rostov, Belarus and Moscow. They bought houses in the village 18 months ago, turning one of them into a chapel and led isolated lives. They even prohibited their children from attending school.

The Russian newspaper Izvestia daily reported that Kuznetsov is a schizophrenic and received medical treatment for the same a few years ago

Born in the village of Nikolskoye, Kuznetsov was a deeply religious from his childhood. However, with time his piety became increasingly unhealthy, the daily reported.

He always spoke about an upcoming doomsday and sometimes discussed philosophic matters with strangers. His wife, unable to deal with her husband's curious nature, alerted psychiatrists. Thereafter he spent a month in a local psychiatric clinic and was discharged only after being diagnosed with schizophrenia. Later Kuznetsov declared himself to be a priest-monk and a prophet, and soon attracted a large following. Some reports said Kuznetsov is under custody and under psychiatric examination.
