According to Polls, Fred Thompson Foundering
Wash Post ^ | 11/13/07 | Chris Cillizza

The American electorate is a fickle mistress. Just ask former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.).

When Thompson announced his candidacy for president just after Labor Day most national polls showed him running a close second behind former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and the majority of state polls had him in the top three.

No longer. Thompson's campaign has yet to take off as expected and voters -- especially in crucial early states like Iowa, New Hampshire and Florida.

The most recent data comes from New Hampshire where two surveys were released over the weekend. The first, conducted by theUniversity of New Hampshire for the Boston Globe, put Thompson in sixth (yes, SIXTH) place with just three percent of the vote. (Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney led the way with 32 percent.) In a Marist University poll Thompson again took sixth place with just five percent support. To be clear, Thompson was never a frontrunner in New Hampshire but polls conducted in the run-up to his announcement and just after he formally entered the race show him regularly polling in double digits.

Thompson's shrinking support is apparent in other early states as well. The last three polls taken in Iowa put Thompson in fourth, fifth and fourth place, respectively, and his high water mark in any of those surveys is 11 percent. In Florida, too, Thompson appears to be fading. A new poll conducted for the Miami Herald and St. Petersburg Times showed Thompson in fifth place (eight percent) behind Giuliani (36 percent), Romney (19 percent), Arizona Sen. John McCain (12 percent) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (nine percent).

I’m not an Evangelical either. I most certainly am a Christian.

more like hatred of those who question people’s stated religious beliefs.
***Except that, with the word “probably” showing up there, you really don’t have a leg to stand on.

Weasel words don't impress me.

In context. I asked you half a dozen times at least if I was misinterpreting you and you refused to answer.
***After I answered. That means you were just badgering a Freeper. I am not obligated to play that particular game.

You're losing your focus. Romney's the only guy that Jesus has given you permission to bash.

Kiss, make up, and start attacking Mitt and his family . . . . lest you find yourselves cast out of the Kingdom.

but dobson is evangelical and he’s going to go for one as well. That means Huck is very likely to get his endorsement

Fine. Whatever.

But no Evangelical or member of any other Christian faith should be publicly denouncing the faith of another Christian (whom they’ve never met, by the way).

***Especially when you go back and read the post and see that they are actually there. Your buddy just said Fred isn’t an evangelical, isn’t that a bad thing? You should jump all over him. After all, it’s a weasel word. It comes from the Greek EU which means Good and Angelos which means Messenger. Fred ain’t a good messenger, that’s what your buddy just said. Cue the rage. Question his manlihood. Get all bent out of shape. Push the meaning completely out of context. Go for it. It should be fun.

***Didn’t you say that it was a private email? You said you “believed” (thought you didn’t like weasel words) it was leaked intentionally by Dobson?

Petronski:

Can we trust that leaked memo to be a reflection of what Dobson thinks?
I sure can. I believe Big Jim leaked it himself to force Freddie to rush up and kiss Big Jim’s ring.

Didn’t work.

Ah yes, the sweet moral superiority of the Willard Fan.

Let's have a look!

Fred is not a liberal.
But liberal comes from the Latin liber which means free. So does that mean that Fred is against freedom?

Push the meaning completely out of context.

You've handled that quite beautifully. I couldn't dream of improving on your work here.

Right, I don’t buy that for a second. I read what you wrote, you did not say “According to Dobson” or anything of that nature... You made a statement. ***That’s fine, and I’ll stick by it.

My honest opinion was that he was speaking very definitively about “the” Holy Grail of politics... and with the media being like it is today, Fred was just being utterly clear and concise... about a subject most people tune out.

Fair enough. I guess with this stage of (as Hillary would say) "gotcha" politics, it is crucial to be concise. But I want to see some of the Hollywood bravura performance at debates so he can gain momentum.

That’s right. It’s my belief.

If I wanted to use weasel words, I’d say it’s PROBABLY my belief.

See, that way I get to say it without really saying it...the Big Jim Dobson way.

Better watch it, Petronski might jump all over your case for that. “Fred is against freedom” — are those your words? Repeat post 5 times. Post to others that the guy is giving you crickets. Make a big deal out of it. So, do I have the procedure down, did I get it right? I’ll need to be real good at this as we move forward in these debates.

It’s mostly the Romney Sleaze Machine, with a few postcards from oblivion thrown in out of sheer desperation.

You have that right!....BTW is it just me, or are there quite a few new Fred supporters showing up on these threads with sign-up dates going back a while? Sure glad to see them weighing in.

I’ve noticed the same thing. I think there is a noticeable pickup in “vocal” Thompson support.
