The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Rudy Giuliani on top, Mitt Romney in second, and Fred Thompson sinking in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. Giuliani attracts 27% support from Likely Republican Primary voters nationwide while Romney has moved up a couple of points to 16%. John McCain remains in third at 13% while Thompson is now tied with Mike Huckabee at 11%. Ron Paul's support fell a point to 5% and no other Republican tops 2% (see recent daily numbers).
In the race for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, Senator Hillary Clinton is the top choice for 41% of Likely Democratic Primary Voters. Senator Barack Obama earns the vote from 20% while former Senator John Edwards attracts 17%. Bill Richardson is preferred by 5% and no other candidate tops the 3% level among Likely Democratic Primary Voters (see recent daily numbers).
Just 25% of Americans believe Democratic candidates have been piling on Clinton and attacking her unfairly. Democrats are more likely to believe that to be the case, but there is no gender gap on the issue.
New state election polls show Giuliani and McCain competitive with Clinton in Connecticut, Clinton competitive in Georgia, and Clinton doing well in Tennessee against anyone but Thompson. Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss has solid leads over three potential challengers in his bid for re-election and former Senator Bill Frist is a very early favorite for the 2010 Governors election in Tennessee.
Romney is now seen as the most conservative Republican candidate, a crown previously worn by Thompson. Huckabee is gaining fast, hampered only by a relatively low level of name recognition. Polling data from the past week has been kind to Romney, Huckabee, and McCain.
Among Democrats, the campaign has become a tale of two narratives that will collide in Iowa on January 3. In one narrative, Clintons campaign has been hurt by the stumbles of recent weeks while the other considers her the dominant frontrunner. Both have the virtue of being true.
Finally, 61% of Americans now want U.S. troops to come home from Iraq within the year.
The Rasmussen Reports Election 2008 Presidential Tracking Poll is updated daily, Monday through Friday. The Presidential Tracking Poll will be updated seven days a week beginning Saturday, December 1, 2007. Daily results are based upon a four day rolling average and new results are posted each day by noon Eastern.
Daily tracking results are from survey interviews conducted over four days ending last night. Each update includes approximately 750 Likely Democratic Primary Voters and 600 Likely Republican Primary Voters. Margin of sampling error for each is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
Rasmussen Reports provides a weekly analysis of both the Republican and Democratic race each Monday.
Each Monday, full week results are released based upon a seven-day rolling average. While the daily tracking result are useful for measuring quick reaction to events in the news, the full week results provide an effective means for evaluating longer-term trends.
I'll try that. I've had an idea to try another trick too. Thanks for the input.
At this point, the only thing I can say is that I’ll support whoever’s nominated, and I hope he can beat Hillary.
Robertson & other social conservatives endorsing someone other with Fred solidifies Giuliani/Romney/Huckabee among portions of the conservative base, reduces appeal of Thompson's "consistent conservative" message.
Romney working his butt off as usual continues to help.
Thompson supporter Paul(?) Martin's past probably did not help.
Thompson not supporting certain positions such as constitutional amendments for conservative issue X,Y,Z probably did not help him among certain people although I understand Fred's position.
OK, here's the beauty of the situation. Fred is still being Fred, and I have an even better picture of what he is like even with all the noise, and am even more comfortable with him given what I know now. If he takes the nomination and the presidency, it will a great political yarn for the ages.
I am taking the step of putting the "$300 haircut" Fred Thompson bumper sticker (from cafepress) on my car when it arrives in the mail next week and am more than happy driving my vehicle around for the next 4 years with it for all to view during the Clinton/Obama/ Giuliani/Romney administration(s).

I remember in my earliest political experience my father fighting to keep the John Birch Society from playing too strong a role in the Republican Party. He walked out of the Republican National Convention in 1964, when Barry Goldwater said, Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. Because he saw that as a tacit approval of the effort the John Birch Society was making to influence the Republican Party. The only material difference between Romney and Hillary is Hillary doesn’t lie about being a liberal.
Relax, breath deep and stay focused.
This is all going as it should.
Expect it to actually get a little worse as Mitt spends more money.
But then look at Fred’s first senate run, he was doomed there as well...
And won by 20%...
People like flash, but vote for Conservatives...
As we all know, spiff is a notorious liar.
Even the big guy pointed that out yesterday.
Speaking of the big guy, perhaps a ping is in order.
Thompson is NOT tied for last in this poll, he’s statistically tied with Willard. The parenthetical in the title is false.
That’s all true, but after the next couple weeks with the holidays will there be much opportunity for Fred to turn it around?
They would likely decline. Why would they give him publicity? They could simply say they had other campaign priorities and commitments.
After Thompson skipped the NH debate by waiting a day to announce on the Tonite Show, he would have little room to complain.
Ppl could have said the same thing when they picked GWB over the more conservative candidates. Problem is it’s a popularity contest as much as it is a contest of ideas. Steve Forbes was far superior to GWB on policy, but never had a chance. Maybe the base was correct to pick the guy who could be popular over the nerdy guy. Who knows?
Huck, I thought you reformed..
More than enough, no one is looking close right now, nor will they until 30 days out or less.
Only psychos like us keep track of this stuff.
Right now these polls are based on what people see, not hear...
Steve Forbes was far superior to GWB on policy, but never had a chance. Maybe the base was correct to pick the guy who could be popular over the nerdy guy. Who knows?”
Man, I loved Forbes. But he was too much of a freak to ever get elected to anything, much less President.
“I really thought Fred would connect not only with the GOP Base but with Independents in Blue and Purple States.”
He’s gotta spend the money advertising. If we could see polls where he is buying commercials, you might have a different poll.
“And ppl can whine about the MSM all they want, but that doesn’t make it go away. Gotta deal with it.”
That’s the smartest thing I’ve seen posted today.
The MSM doesn’t “fear Fred”. Thompson has some pretty good positions, but so far he hasn’t exactly been a fireball about getting out in front. I’m not slagging the candidate, just the way the campaign has been run. It’s a race....not a mosey.
FDT and his supporters ignore that at there peril.
There’s plenty of time, RR. I have great faith in Fred’s sense of pacing.
I do an awfull lot of searching on the search engines, google being the paramount one, the reason Rudy isn't tanking badly in the polls is because his staff is using the internet to make folks think he is not liberal in his views.
The other candidates should be using it to their advantage also. For instance we all know that among other things Rudy is Pro-Illegal, but Rudy's folks are paying google and the like for ads that make people think otherwise.
Heres a hint, do a search for illegal aliens on google, notice the number one spot at the top? The same with Yahoo. Hopefully Hunter and Fred's staff sees this and gets the ball rolling, because Rudy is making it look like he is against Illegal Immigration and we all know otherwise.
This is bs. I don’t see one conservative in the entire bunch on that chart. What’s going on here. Can’t the conservative party elect a real conservative?
But so far, events are matching my expectations/perceptions, and so it goes. I think if Fred doesn't get his act together, we're looking at Romney v Guliani, and I see that as bad news for us. I'm not happy about it, but I ain't gonna delude myself either. So just gimme some slack. I don't think I'm going too far.
I’m afraid that I think that if that is Rudy or Mitt, then it's 8 more years of Clinton.
In my opinion, Rudy removes most of Hillary’s negatives, which are probably the only thing keeping her from getting elected.
I also think a majority of Americans would actually pick the Stalinist b$#ch over the Mormon.
