U.S. School Board Meetings Should Be Conducted in English
Fox News ^ | November 12, 2007 | John Gibson

Posted on 11/13/2007 7:55:20 AM PST by 3AngelaD

The Los Angeles Unified School District...is embroiled in a nasty debate about whether meetings of a district advisory board should be conducted in English or Spanish. I don't have a child in the district, but let me say this as clearly as I can for the activists wanting to conduct meetings in anything but English: Yo quiero Ingles, por favor. For the rest of you: I want English, please. One parent said it was racist to demand people who come to America speak English. I think not.

What's really odd about this debate out in L.A. for many of us is that it is not the usual clash between Anglo-nativists and newly arrived Hispanic immigrants... this is a battle which pits African-Americans against newly arrived Hispanic immigrants. The African-Americans think they are getting ripped off if a key advisory council to the school district is conducting business — dividing up federal money in many cases — in a language they cannot understand.

Some African-American parents have kids in these schools who are underachieving and want to see federal money spent equitably on their children as well as Hispanic children, and they are the ones who are feeling abused if the debates over millions in federal money are conducted in the language of the newcomers.

...the African-American parents have a point most Americans support: This is an English-speaking country when it comes to official business, and English speakers should not be excluded from participation in school business because they have not picked up Spanish fast enough.

Their position seems to be: Welcome to America. We speak English. We have classes for everybody to learn English, but that's as far as we'll go. Seems fair to me.

Unbelievable!!!!

Calling common sense measures “racist” isn’t really working anymore. It makes illegals and their supporters look so desperate now.

Strange, when the Europeans came to America in mass numbers, they felt it was important to learn English. Why does todays immigrants feel they don't?

One parent said it was racist to demand people who come to America speak English. I think not. Is it racist for Mexico to demand Spanish? European countries to demand people speak their native languages? English is the language of America that binds us together. It shows respect for our country and the opportunities that it presents. With people coming from so many countries there has to be a common language, and english is it, not because "we" designated it, but that the world decided. there are 230 languages being spoken in Los Angeles. English is also, the language of commerce, so if the parents want their kids to be ready for the business world, they better teach them to speak english.

Blacks will continue to be marginalized as long as they stay on the plantation and vote for democrats 90%+. Blacks are apparantly ok with racism if it favors them but now they are against it when it goes against them - go figure.

It isn’t about Anglo-nativists and African Americans versus Hispanics. There are over 200 languages in Los Angeles. A common language, in this case english, is that language. The immigrant shows respect when they learn it. They also, insure that they will be more productive and have a better life since english is the language of commerce worldwide.

0h I don’t know. I think this is the Spanish-speakers trying to see how far they will be allowed to push, because every time they push, we fold, and finally someone is pushing back.

The shame of the matter is that ice is so damn incompetent that these people have the gall to get up and ask for freebies at all.

Blacks were also in favor of racial profiling of muslums after 911.

The longer this little game goes on...the less integration you will see...and eventually businesses will ask themselves why set up in “Mexico, USA”? As for the fight against English...if those folks spend this much time and effort to fight it...maybe they should have spent the same amount of time and effort in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, etc....making those locations into “world-class states”...but they didn’t.

Their lack of effort in Mexico and Latin America speaks volumes. If I went to any Asian country...and offered them a chance to move to the US...learn English and integrate...99 percent would do it. This is true in Vietnam, India or Philippines.

If I went into African nation....you’d see the same fire and same drive to integrate and speak English. At some point...we all have to start asking the right questions...and grasp why some folks can’t integrate.

Godspeed to those black parents! I think many white parents would cower out of fear of appearing “racist,” but the black parents are more likely to speak up. More power to them!

Not so unbeleivable really. It's worked so well for the Jacksons and Sharptons of this world that everyone is using it now.

Tell ya what's unbelievable:
(A) African-Americans wake up to illegal immigration.
(B)Finally, an issue where "minorities suffer most!"
