Middle-Class Dream Eludes African American Families
Washington Post ^ | 13 November 2007 | Michael A. Fletcher

Nearly half of African Americans born to middle-income parents in the late 1960s plunged into poverty or near-poverty as adults, according to a new study -- a perplexing finding that analysts say highlights the fragile nature of middle-class life for many African Americans.

Overall, family incomes have risen for both blacks and whites over the past three decades. But in a society where the privileges of class and income most often perpetuate themselves from generation to generation, black Americans have had more difficulty than whites in transmitting those benefits to their children.

Forty-five percent of black children whose parents were solidly middle class in 1968 -- a stratum with a median income of $55,600 in inflation-adjusted dollars -- grew up to be among the lowest fifth of the nation's earners, with a median family income of $23,100. Only 16 percent of whites experienced similar downward mobility. At the same time, 48 percent of black children whose parents were in an economic bracket with a median family income of $41,700 sank into the lowest income group.

This troubling picture of black economic evolution is contained in a package of three reports being released today by the Pew Charitable Trusts that test the vitality of the American dream. Using a nationally representative data source that for nearly four decades has tracked people who were children in 1968, researchers attempted to answer two questions: Do Americans generally advance beyond their parents in terms of income? How much is that affected by race and gender?

"We are attempting to broaden the current debate" beyond the growing gap between higher- and lower-income Americans, said John Morton, Pew's managing director for program planning and economic policy. "There is little out there on the question of mobility across generations, and we wanted to examine that."

Sadly, way too many black teachers have bought into the liberal feel good methodology. They used to be the hard nosed no nonsense types who balanced love and strictness.
And I know all about WHITE punks and thugs.Went to school with tons of them back in the Sixties.

It does transcend our American politics. We are in a struggle worldwide for the ultimate future of civilization. While we fight Islamofascists abroad, the enemy among us has been working overtime. At every turn, in every conflict you can see the three main forces colliding. It's happen in every country on the planet.

You can see it most easily and predominately in old Europe from afar but but sometimes it's hard to see what is right in front of your own nose. The US is under attack at the cultural level. There is no mistake about it. It's even happening in places like Pakistan where the Marxist element is nosing it's way in.

I don't know why it's so difficult for people here to grasp that we are under the same assault as Europe and everywhere else and it's a world effort. Look at what happen with Turkey and the PKK just recently. Our Dems, our own congress, stuck their noses in and tried to stir things up between an Allies and the world workers party.

Explain why we don't arrest people for treason any longer, or why the media lies continuously and get's away with it. Or why our schools act so foolishly. Or why hollywood is putting out films with Anti-American themes. It's here and it is winning so far. If it were not for the Internet, it would already be a done deal.

As for your comment about Bush..he is venomously hated by the left. That should tell you something.

Good points you made about the culture war.Its almost like The West is on a journey to self destruction.
Not taking a poke at Bush.Just pointing out that electing Conservatives or quasi-Conservatives does little to halt the lemming march to the sea.

I have supported President Bush from day one. I guess after four years I can see the man just as clearly as anyone else. He is one of us and he has been in denial as well we all have. France just woke up. Maybe America will as well.

Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell and numerous other brilliant black people attribute current-day black poverty to out-of-wedlock births and resultant single-mom head of family, and lack of education.

Yeah, I know ... I'm a racist

Liberal policies and self-inflicted pathologies have kept them down.

"Liberal policies and self-inflicted pathologies have kept them down."

True. The only question left, is it intentional?
