Democrats Shoot Themselves In The Hoof (Dems Mess Up Junking Terms Limits Initiative Alert)

Proposition 93 would reduce the total years someone could be a legislator from 14 to 12, but allow all to be served in one house. Currently, lawmakers are permitted just three two-year terms in the Assembly and two four-year stints in the Senate.

There's an unfortunate self-serving provision, however, in Proposition 93, which purports to be a "citizens' initiative" but actually is sponsored by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez (D-Los Angeles) and backed by Senate leader Don Perata (D-Oakland). That sweetheart deal would allow current lawmakers to serve 12 years in their present house, no matter how many they already had spent in the other house. So some members, including Perata, could wind up serving more total years in the Legislature than the 14 currently permitted.

Legislators are human too. And given human nature, it's probably too much to expect that they'd craft a term-limits measure that didn't benefit them personally.

"Then the heck with them," says Allan Hoffenblum, a former Republican consultant who publishes the California Target Book, which handicaps legislative races. "They got too cute. It turned out to be nothing but 'me, me, me.' "

That was one fumble.

The Dems messed up an intiative to junk Californian strict term limits law by including a sweetheart provision to allow Don Perata and Fabian Nunez to serve longer as legislative leaders. Proposition 93 is a Trojan Horse that benefits career politicians and Republican voters should not be fooled into thinking it reduces the amount of time politicians serve in office. It does the exact opposite. I'm glad to see Steven Poizner open his checkbook to defeat it, even though he's a veritable RINO.

The poster child for voting "NO" on Proposition 93. Do you really want to give Fabian Nunez another SIX years? I don't know of any one in California who thinks that's a swell idea. From Shawn Steel last week, courtesy of the Flash Report:

----------------------------------------------------------

Steve Maviglio, spokeshole for CA Assembly Speaker Fabian “Louis Vuitton” Nunez, must be auditioning for a new job. He knows his boss’ career is dying with Prop 93’s February defeat, which is why he unleashed this attack on the California Nurses Association for contributing to my wife’s campaign. Once again, Democrats attack hardworking, middle-class Californians and demonstrate how out-of-touch they are with their own union constituency. (You can read Jon's excellent commentary this morning for the complete rundown on Nunez's problems.)

Nunez is targeting the California Nurses Association because they had the audacity to question the Speaker’s rich and famous lifestyle paid for with their campaign contributions. Last month, the LA Times (hardly a member of the vast right-wing conspiracy), uncovered that Nunez was scamming campaign contributions from union members to pay for his overseas adventures. Nunez spent over $100,000 in political contributions on overseas trips, Louis Vuitton bags, expensive bottles of wine, and meals at fancy restaurants.

In defending his lifestyle, Fabian said, “"There's not too big a difference between how I live and how most middle-class people live."

Mind you, Núñez recently purchased an upscale $1.25 million Sacramento mansion with mortgage payments in excess of $100,000 a year. The only time working class people visit Nunez’s mansion is when they are there to clean it.

Nunez proved during this year’s budget that no union is safe from his vengeance. Nunez and legislative Democrats balanced this year’s budget on the backs of CA teachers by raising their taxes by $170 million. Democrats would rather pay for Steve Maviglio's $175,000 annual salary and recent pay raise than give teachers a tax credit for their out-of-pocket classroom expenses.

Louis Vuitton shopping sprees, million dollar mansions, tax increases on teachers, and now an attack on California’s nurses. We don’t need to attack Prop. 93. Everyday, Fabian's foibles make the case against it.
-------------------------------------------------------

Yep. Just another Democrat who lives in a mansion and attacks the middle class. With tax increases and attacks on nurses. A good reason not to give him SIX MORE years. Vote NO on Proposition 93!
