If U.S. lawmakers have their way, the lights may soon go out on Thomas Edison's greatest invention -- the incandescent light bulb. The 19th-century inventor brought illumination to the world's fingertips, but according to Congress, his invention isn't efficient enough for an age anxious about energy supplies.
"Only 10% of the power used by today's incandescent bulbs is emitted as light, while the other 90% is released as heat," Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., said when she introduced her legislation to ban standard light bulbs.
To eliminate this waste, Harman has proposed legislation that would effectively eliminate incandescent light bulbs from store shelves nationwide as early as 2012.

OMG....do you think that trash doesn’t go all in one place eventually??
LEDs are nice but they do have limitations, Id imagine there must be possibilities with miniature HID bulbs of various type gasses also
That's great and the government didn't even tell you that you had to do it.
My rat party run state government has recently told us that a CO2 detector is mandatory in every home. I already had 2 of them.
I'm waiting for state inspections to make sure everyone is in compliance.
People like you are sometimes to anti-left for your own good. Just because their cause is a bunch of crap (global warming/socialism) doesn’t mean that it can’t be better from a non left position. The amount of energy saved from these bulbs are amazing and I said in my other post the prices of these bulbs are almost the same as a regular bulb from GE/etc.
You can now buy CF bulbs that work with a dimmer.
I think the bigger problem are special application bulbs, e.g. inside a fridge or oven, or special use outdoor bulbs that can't support a CF bulb.
The other problems with CF bulbs are the light generally isn't as nice, and some take up to a minute to reach full brightness.
Yes, but with CFLs, lumens is a far more useful rating than wattage. Look for bulbs with lumens that match your old incandescent varieties.
Yes. The new bulb will only draw 26 watts. It will give as much light as a standard 100-watt bulb, but it will work fine even in a 30-watt socket.
We use LED lighting aboard military aircraft. Works great
I don’t think the government has any business getting involved in it but a lot of people on FR are really anti CFLs period for no good reason. Cutting back 10% on energy used of Americans immediately would drastically cut back on energy prices and send less $$ overseas. I am encouraging the switch but do not advocate using the gov’t to do it.
Right; and if they emit heat, then you don’t have to turn up the heater as high, right?
Hey, Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif. This is none of your freaking business. I will gladly send you a copy of the Constitution (the one for the United States). You need to read that thing and find out what the *(*** your job is. Get out of my business.
“Cutting back 10% on energy used of Americans immediately would drastically cut back on energy prices and send less $$ overseas.”
Only to buy CFL lights made in China with few environmental controls.
Signed - Not anti-cfl
They don’t last any longer then incendescents. They are an environmental nightmare. They are expensive. You can’t dim the fool things.
LEDs work much better.
They can have my incandescent light bulbs when they screw it from my cold dead socket.
What's the difference between that and the conventional lights made in china with few environmental controls?
They’ll work for a few minutes, then burn out. Or they burn out your dimmer switch and perhaps the wall.
Nonsense, CFLs on average use will last for 5 years, vs around 1 for a incendescent.
Shishhhhh
Don't give them any more ideas please....
More to the point is that once again the gov is going to tell us what we can or cannot buy...
If the incandecent bulb is such a power waster it will go by the wayside via the free market...people won't buy it... GE will quit making it .... Geese Pelosi, do something usefull for a change... out law democrats...who also cannot be turned down with a dhimmer switch....
4 pack is $7 at Home Depot.
