Top 40 and Country have been morally corrupt for a long time, BTW. I don’t like hearing about sluttery, drunkenness, despair or drugs from music.

Mere alcohol doesn’t thrill me at all.

It’s nothing new:

Puff the Magic Dragon, Peter Paul and Mary

Snowbird, Anne Murray

Even country music gets in on the action:

- It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere
- All my friends say I started shooting doubles when you walked in.

These are just two of many examples.

Yeah, alcohol use may not be substance abuse in the porn belt, but it’s substance abuse nonetheless.

She fell in love with a guy named Smokey,
She loved him even though he was cokie.
He took her down to China town,
And he showed her how to kick the gong around.

Cab Calloway’s Minnie the Moocher.

Have you seen that funny reefer man?
That funny, funny, funny reefer man.
Another Cab Calloway song.

***Top 40 and Country have been morally corrupt for a long time,***

Sinc at least the 1940’s. Booz and drunken dives an slutty women were the trademark.

I’ll bet Iran doesn’t have this problem. Or Cuba. Or China. Or North Korea.

In some of my songs I have casually mentioned
The fact that I like to drink beer
This little song is more to the point
Roll out the barrel and lend me your ears

(chorus)
I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskeys too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer
(he likes beer)

My wife often frowns when were out on the town
And Im wearing a suit and a tie
Shes sipping vermouth and she thinks Im uncouth
When I yell as the waiter goes by

(chorus)

Last night I dreamed that I passed from the scene
And I went to a place so sublime
Aw, the water was clear and tasted like beer
Then they turned it all into wine (awww)

I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskeys too rough, champagne costs too much, and vodka puts my mouth in gear
Aw, this little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I love beer
(yes, he likes beer)

Every time you take a sip
In this smoky atmosphere
You press that bottle to your lips
And I wish I was your beer

*singing*

We got cowboys, we got truckers
Broken-hearted fools and suckers
And we got hustlers, we got fighters
Early birds and all-nighters
And the veterans talk about their battle scars

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar!

(Thank you, Mr. Keith!)

“Alcohol and marijuana were the substances most frequently portrayed.

I would think that food would be up there too, along with water.

Those are two substances everyone uses.
