I don't know what it's evolved into. If it's like our main national contact sport "football" they've now got so many rules that lead to "fouls" they they cannot play without appearing silly.
If Roller Derby has the same affliction it won't be any fun to watch either. But....I remember watching it in the 50's and there was no faking what was going on. The skating skills were real and when you went down at 20 miles an hour it took a while to stop. These were some rough girls. Back then you didn't do it on the "gym" floor. There were special banked tracks for building speed. The interviews here seemed to indicate that the women were having fun.....Derby is not about fun....it's about getting out alive.

Yeah, yeah it’s not like the old days. But it does involve sweaty women in skimpy outfits on wheels salmmin’ into each other. Thats fine entertainment imo.

I saw an attempted come-back around 1990. The had a weird track, something like a figure-8 with a jump, iirc.
Didn't do anything for me, but they had Blondie as the half-time entertainment, trying to promote a song, so I stuck around.
