“On-the-job or online training will provide the necessary qualifications.”

For some IT positions, yes. I haven’t polled them all, but I know of no highly-paid software developers or systems architects who do not have a degree, to include rather costly subsequent certification and training. As more and more universities are offering degrees that specialize in things like web development and other IT positions, employers are more interested in hiring applicants with degrees in those positions.

We have brought in several young people (19 to 23) with either no degree or a degree in unrelated fields and begun to give them on-the-job and online training, but they’re not making anything remotely close to $100,000 and never will.

I’m a software engineer. I made 125K working for AIG in California. Did I mention I have no degree.

Bull.

I am a college dropout and earned that in the 90s as a programmer. I know lots of other people in the same boat. The most hard core UNIX internals programmer I know - and I know a few - has an Associates - in a totally unrelated subject.
