You don't always need that piece of Latin-laden paper to pull in six figures. You don't need to invent something to get rich. And you don't need to look far for a lucrative opportunity.
There are plenty of honest livings to be made in the U.S workforce that can earn you six-figure salaries sans a college degree. That's not to say you won't be required to undergo extensive training or work long hours, but at least you won't be lugging around that student debt. It's important to note that they're not all "blue-collar" jobs, a term that has become outdated when describing skilled-trade work.

Let me re-phrase that, “Chicago area” union carpenters.

I didn’t say I “liked” unions. Quite the contrary, in fact it’s disgusting that they get paid for they produce.
The autoworkers are another breed altogether, they pay them them to sit around instead of laying them off so they can keep their “trained” employees. All with full benefits, I might add.
Maybe 20 years ago. Not any more.
My dad was a commercial fisherman for at least 25 years, from the early 60s to the late 80s. His particular fishery was albacore and salmon, trolling. He earned the equivalent of six figures many years and our large family lived well, but success like his was very, very rare. On the whole west coast in that fishery, maybe a few hundred captains -- maybe -- were in the same league. On the other hand, there were thousands of commercial albacore/salmon fishermen on the West Coast at the time. Most of them didn't make enough for a good living. And that was true for pretty much every fishery on the coast. Lots of guys dreaming of making a good living, very few ever actually achieving that. It's a hard life that requires smarts, discipline, mathematical, technical, survival, and mechanical skills, and balls -- all in amounts well above average.
Today, regulations have gotten so ridiculous that it's damned near impossible for a man to make a good living in a commercial fishery, at least on the West Coast. It's disgusting and sad to see so many great industries and family traditions go by the wayside because of asswipe environmentalists and their bullsh*t regulations. Some of those regulations, like the ones that have maximum catches in a very small seasonal window, kill fishermen, who are already in a dangerous, unpredictable business without the gubmint telling them when they can fish, a cap on how much they can catch, and a merciless limit in how much time they have to do it. Disgusting and murderous.

It’s probably big. I’d bet the smartest guys specialize in lucrative elective procedures like fat-sucking and boob jobs and such. The other guys are probably stuck staffing emergency rooms in the top 10 most deadly cities and hacking up 13 yo girls in planned parenthoods nationwide.

Very, very few rock stars are millionaires, unless they’ve been in the game a long time and have a couple huge hits - and even then, a lot of them blow through the money in a couple of years.
You’d be surprised how little some very famous musicians actually make.
Same for actors - there’s a lot of pretending going on, and the majority of actors probably make a decent solid middle class living, perhaps close to 100k, but they make up for it with freebies and per diems while working, and having most of their meals paid for while they work.
There’s only a small handful of actors and musicians who are “rich”, and tens of thousands, if not more, who are happy to make 40k a year.
English is weird. This is the one advantage native speakers have in the field of technical writing. Technical writing is a wonderful career for people who enjoy playing with new toys, and learning new technologies. I'm sanguine at the moment, since my current contract pays benefits, is with a stable company, and serving a reasonably stable client. It was great to bring my wife home last July, after a six-year sojourn in the work force. (she took a health-care job after the dot-com bust).
My son was looking into trucking school. He ended up not going at the last minute because he frankly couldn’t deal with life on the road. You are away from home, alone, almost all the time. The turnover is huge.
His friend, however, did the course. It was amazing. This guy has a serious weight problem and couldn’t get a regular job. So he goes to trucking school for a week or two, and is hired immediately. It’s decent money for two weeks in school and a job that’s in demand.
The best part is, he met a girl, got married, and she is going for her licenses and they are trucking together. As a “team” they earn better money and don’t suffer the usual road loneliness.

A friend's daughter married a loser. She frequently pinged her parents for financial emergencies. Then one day, she won $5,000 playing the lottery. A few weeks later, she was begging mom and dad for help. What happened to that $5K?
They spent it on lottery tickets.
Also, take time to play with your kids, go fishing, do things with your family etc.

Unionized Pittsburgh Port Authority bus drivers get around $80K to drive around mostly empty buses. Just one more reason the city is constantly flirting with bankruptcy. But that's a small price to pay to ensure a Republican is never elected to anything. < / sarcasm >

As you know, though, most engineers (with degrees) would consider you a tech, not an engineer. No matter how wonderful you are, without that paper you ain’t an engineer.
