This is both very good news, and a reminder why our situation has many more opportunities for advancing American interests and is much more complex than the “Islam is the enemy” crowd here at FR would have us believe.
Real traditional Islamic societies as they have evolved over time—becoming more pragmatic than the literalist approach to the Qu’ran and the Hadiths taken by AQ and other Salafist groups—are, when faced with the reality of AQ’s program (and similarly the Ta’ajili ideology of the Iranian regime) as much opposed to it as we are. Once they see Salafism in action, they decide the Salafists are nuts, and they’ll fight alongside the American infidel to get rid of them (esp. once someone reminds them of our history of beating our enemies, then helping folks set up their own society and leaving).
