The hertic Coleman and I brushed by each other at the Convention of the American Meteorological Society in 1982 in Boston (where I think it was held that year). He was receiving an AMS award for his founding of the new cable channel. And, many of the egomaniacs of the broadcast channels back then were seething with jealousy over John’s accomplishment. It’s too bad that the Weather Channel has foundered on the shoals of political correctness since he gave up the reins early on in the channels’ growth. It used to be the first place I’d visit in the a.m. to check on the veracity of my own forecast issued the night before. Those were the days, when, graphics consisted of throwing magnetic numbers on a board and videotape of satellite pix and the like were all we had to use to portray a weathercast. What a puff job that was.

Yeah, back in the days when you could turn on the Weather Channel and, get this, find out the temperature!

Now it’s like MTV.
