Marijuana has its positives, study shows.
The Daily Telegraph ^ | November 6, 2007 | Staff

A STUDY of more than 5000 youngsters in Switzerland has found those who smoke marijuana do as well or better in some areas as those who don't.

But the same was not true for those who used both tobacco and marijuana, who tended to be heavier users of the drug, said the report by Dr J.C. Suris and colleagues at the University of Lausanne.

The study did not confirm the hypothesis that those who abstained from marijuana and tobacco functioned better overall, the authors said.

In fact, those who used only marijuana were "more socially driven ... significantly more likely to practice sports and they have a better relationship with their peers" than abstainers, it said.

"Moreover, even though they are more likely to skip class, they have the same level of good grades; and although they have a worse relationship with their parents, they are not more likely to be depressed" than abstainers, it said.

It did not explain the reasons behind the apparent effect.

Well of course. They're the cool kids now for doing pot. Will they be so cool when they're 30, stoned, and too lazy to get out of their parents' basements?

Correlation does not imply cause and effect.

and some, not still living as 30 year olds in their parents basements will be in psychotic wards.

"A STUDY of more than 5000 youngsters in Switzerland has found those who smoke marijuana do as well or better in some areas as those who don't."

Similarly, a study of more than 5000 youngsters in Chicago has found those who ski and play golf do as well or better in some areas as those who play basketball.

What a joke.

I have nothing against pot smokers per se, in fact I think it should be legalized.

That said my personal survey of 65 years has led to the observation that most pot smokers are very laid back and tend to be less driven than people who don't smoke pot. Also their short term memories are pretty bad.

I have known a lot of pot smokers(so do all of you if you but knew the truth about all of your friends and aquaintances)and the heavy users are pretty much useless.

One of my nephews fits into that category except he finally quit smoking it and made something of himself and admits that he had no inclination to actually work while he was smoking(he smoked from high school until he was about 30). I am not talking about the casual user but those that indulge frequently during the day every day. This is my observation and not intended as scientific fact, but I would say my survey over the years is just as valid as the one mentioned in this article. My observations are only valid for the pot smokers I know, not for all.

As long as people are having anonymous unprotected sex with multiple partners while experimenting with mind altering drugs, I’ll be sound as a pound.

I asked a friend who smokes pot and this is what he said:

True, and if they want to be slackers, it's their business. Free country and all. My only real complaint with pot is it gives me the munchies something awful. One decent bag of weed and I'm gonna pack on a few pounds of snacks in no time. Go on sabbatical from pot? Pounds come right off.

I've found pot to be an excellent lubricant for certain types of work--like cleaning. Back when I was a line cook, I used to smoke up before breaking everything down at the end of the night. No one had shinier stainless steel in their kitchen!

Pot increases the heart rate, and gets the brain going. That can sometimes give you scattered thoughts, and make it harder to focus on one thing. Productivity can then suffer. But if you've got the right task laid out before you, it can be quite a nice buzz. I find pot and coffee to be a nice combo. The coffee counteracts some of the unwanted side effects of the pot.

Thanks to my friend for sharing these thoughts.

So it's effects are comparable to playing golf or basketball.

“Marijuana has its positives, study shows.”

Everything has it’s positives, except global warming.

I’ve known habitual pot smokers who have careers and make good money. I figure they are motivated to make money so they can buy more pot.

The potheads I've known only have other potheads as close friends. It's a tight social group, like a gang. But it must be sad knowing all your friends come from only the 5% of the population who are habitual users.

Huh?

Even if you got your question right it wouldn't make sense. What kind of logic is: If A is better than B, and if C is better than D, then A and C are comparable?

You’re the one who made the comparison. If the logic is screwed up, don’t blame me.

No, they will probably steal an operating system and start a company like Microsoft, make a gazillion dollars and live happily ever after.....

In college, I just noticed the stoners smoked more dope than non-stoners. It’s not exactly scientific but I’ll stand by it.

People could smoke dope all day long and still function. But they sounded like TB patients

Oddly, I don’t know any stoners who have really done anything. I know alcoholics who have done well. I even know a crack addict who was successful until he went off the deep end. But it could be that unmotivated people are drawn towards marijuana rather than vice-versa.

Pot is not much of a problem for those who don’t overdo it and it has some medical uses. Sometimes I wish I could smoke a little to relieve night time restless leg syndrome, because it completely relieved the symptoms in as little as five minutes. Ten minutes after that I would be asleep. A blessing!
