Standing at the back of the area on pit road where the top-five qualifiers are held provided an interesting perspective when Dale Earnhardt Jr. came back from his qualifying run.

From 300 yards away you’re saying “he’s going kinda quick, yet.” And he wasn’t slowing up much as he approached the back of Bobby Labonte’s parked No. 43 Dodge. Finally, Junior came to a stop, brakes shrieking and smoke and brake dust spewing from the gaps in his left front wheel.

The show got better when Junior emerged and sinister doesn’t even begin to describe his look with his trademark black helmet, reflective ebony-tinted visor and black fireproof helmet skirt.

But then he took it off and heck, it was just ol’ Junior standing there in his red suit, grinning. And on a sunny afternoon in Avondale, all was right with the world.
