New York Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt's Sunday column, "Civil Discourse, Meet the Internet," delivered some piping hot news, circa year 2000: Web comments can often be rude and crude.
"WARNING: This column contains rude and objectionable language not normally found in the pages of this newspaper but seen surprisingly often on its Web site.

I drove to my Brother’s House on Sunday to go to an NFL game, the Sunday Gnu Yak Times was there, didn’t even touch it.
I read the Post daily and the only reason I get the Daily News is to read Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy.

Speaking of the NYT:

Rosie ODonnell in Talks to Join MSNBC
By JACQUES STEINBERG and BILL CARTER
Published: November 5, 2007
Rosie ODonnell, who abruptly left The View on ABC last spring after drawing attention and ratings for her opinions on everything from the Iraq war to her co-hosts, is in serious discussions to return to television atop a new soapbox: a prime-time show on the cable news channel MSNBC, according to executives on both sides of the negotiations who have been briefed directly.
Under one scenario, Ms. ODonnell would be given the 9 p.m. slot each weeknight on MSNBC, where she would go head-to-head with two heavyweights of cable talk: Larry King Live on CNN and Hannity & Colmes on Fox News. Her show would replace Live with Dan Abrams, a relatively low-rated program that only recently replaced Scarborough Country, which was also little-watched.
———Notice how every show on MSLSD is low-rated and little watched? How sweet it is.

I could do without comments on YouTube.
Just reading comments on YouTube will cause your IQ to drop temporarily (and your blood pressure to rise) but I think that one of the beautiful things about the internet is that it provides a place for all sane but naive people to go and see just how insane other people can be. For instance, there are a lot of people out there who really just don't understand just how nasty a lot of the left-wingers can be. People mistakenly think that left-wingers are good people who just have a different view of things. Ha! A day on YouTube, or better yet, the DU, will open their eyes forever to the real nature of the enemy.

Oh now, come on. They’ll be watching the smoke to see which way the wind is blowing. Besides, I bet you’ll be just a few drops short of putting the fire out completely anyway.

Its the NYT advising its readers to stay away from the scaaaary internet. NYT readers should stay with the safe and easy to comprend newsprint. The NYT will TELL YOU all you need to know....(/s) I've been noticing for several years that the MSM stories about the internet almost always focus on some aspect kiddie-porn, financial scams and identity theft. Don't forget the new bogeyman, the 'online predator'.
