Good article. Thanks.
I’m with Thompson on this one. I don’t want to ban abortion as much as to make it and thousands of other issues, as they properly are, state issues.
This is one issue is actually disagree with Fred on, but not for Pro-Life reasons:
The affording of rights of citizenship is reserved for the Federal government. To declare a fetus protected the same as a “born” individual means to afford it the right of citizenship.
I maintain that the abortion issue’s resolution SHOULD NOT BE solely centered around personal freedom or religious convictions, it is the decision resides with CONGRESS.
So much for the idea that Thompson was the answer for true Conservatives.
You're saying that Hawkins is correct on opposition to the Human Life Amendment.
Personally, I think that I'll go with Ronald Reagan's support for the Human Life Amendment before I go with something some apologist for Thompson has to say to try to soften Thompson's opposition to the pro-life plank of the Republican Party Platform:
"Well now, we come to a family issue that we must have the courage to confront. Tonight, I call America a good nation, a moral people to charitable but realistic consideration of the terrible cost of abortion on demand. To those who say this violates a woman's right to control of her own body can they deny that now medical evidence confirms the unborn child is a living human being entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Let us unite as a nation and protect the unborn with legislation that would stop all federal funding for abortion and with a human life amendment making, of course, an exception where the unborn child threatens the life of the mother. Our Judeo-Christian tradition recognizes the right of taking a life in self-defense." - Ronald Reagan, January 25, 1988
Fred Thompson made his tenth appearance on Meet the Press this Sunday, his first since being an official candidate for President of the United States.
Fred is one of the few candidates in the GOP bold enough to sit face to face with Tim Russet and answer some of the most difficult questions in politics today.
Fred’s appearance on Meet the Press demonstrated he has the stature to lead this nation and the conservative principles to ensure its success into the future.
The interview was very substantive both on foreign and domestic policy issues and showed Fred’s depth of knowledge about the serious threat we face in America from radical Islamic terrorists.
Since he first announced his candidacy, Fred has demonstrated repeatedly that he is the one true consistent conservative in this campaign, and his interview with Tim Russert provided further evidence that he is the only candidate committed to limited government and returning power back to state and local governments.
I prefer to leave abortion up to God. Since He creates people knowing who is going to have an abortion, then it must be OK with Him, otherwise, no one would ever have one.
“Well Tim, just because you believe that withholding of M&M’s is ‘torture’ doesn’t make it so.
I agree with this analysis.
I disagree with this reasoning. If we give the federal government official authority over more things through amendments it broadens the reach of the federal government and shrinks the power of the states.
Yes the states have to ratify an amendment. However, the fact that the states are agreeing to pass power to the federal government does not mean that power is not being transferred. The states cannot simply ask for that power back. It would take another constitutional amendment.
However, I still do support a constitutional amendment that would ban abortion because I feel it is such an important issue that it should be uniformly illegal in the United States, just like slavery.
Fantastic article, with clear thinking.
I firmly believe that Congress may, indeed limit abortion to preservation of the life of the mother, only. The Constitution clearly sets the Legislature over the Supreme Court. We need conservative judges on the Supreme Court to uphold the original intent of the authors of the Constitution.
Thanks. Great article.
