Alcohol, Caffeinated Energy Drinks Dangerous Mix, Study says

Monday, November 05, 2007

College students that mix alcohol with caffeinated energy drinks are at higher risk for alcohol-related injuries than students who drink regular cocktails, according new research from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

The researchers found students who drank the energy cocktails were twice as likely to be hurt or injured, twice as likely to require medical attention, and twice as likely to ride with an intoxicated driver. The study also found students who drank alcohol mixed with energy drinks were more than twice as likely to take advantage of someone else sexually, and almost twice as likely to be taken advantage of.

"We knew anecdotally — from speaking with students, and from researching internet blogs and Web sites — that college students mix energy drinks and alcohol in order to drink more, and to drink longer," said Dr. Mary Claire O'Brien, lead researcher and associate professor of emergency medicine and public health sciences at Wake Forest, in a news release. "But we were surprised that the risk of serious and potentially deadly consequences is so much higher for those who mixed energy drinks with alcohol, even when we adjusted for the amount of alcohol."

Actually, I can still fall asleep drinking that.

However...I’m one of those people that, when I’m tired, I’m TIRED and NOTHING will keep me awake.

I was waiting for someone to bring this up. The same could be said for a Cuba libre

This once again demonstrates that the media is searching for things to write about and sensationalize. As if this sort of thing has not gone on for centuries.

OK, I don’t know what else is in a Soju Kettle, but I am determined to speak out against that stuff. Soju tastes like a cross between rubbing alcohol and kerosene, and I think that’s really all it is, even if it does go great with Kool-Aid.

OK, I just looked up Soju Kettles, and they are just Soju with Kool-Aid, so...there your go. In that case, it sure is drinkable, but I’m still pretty sure you’ll go blind from it eventually.

“...the media is searching for things to write about and sensationalize.”

Come on now, the media wouldn’t do that. You should be ashamed of yourself for doubting our betters.

A passed out drunk is a safe drunk.

Not necessarily to himself, as the examples of Bon Scott, Steve Clark and numerous others prove.

What’s bull?

Alcohol is a depressant, you take a stimulant, such as an energy drink, you counteract the depressant and drink longer and less likely to pass out/stop drinking.

It’s all in the receipe, FRiend: kettle, filled with ice; soju; Sprite; energy drink (Red Bull, SoBe, Rock Star); 10 shot glasses; 9 friends.

The only soju I’ve tried straight up is raspberry-flavored. Very smooth, very tasty. Especially to finish off a meal of squid, sushi, or bulgogi.
