India 'regrets' emergency rule in nuclear-armed Pakistan

India said on Saturday that it regretted the difficult times Pakistan was passing through and said it hoped that the country would return to normalcy soon.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee called a crisis meeting to discuss the implications for India of the imposition of emergency in Pakistan.

“We regret the difficult times that Pakistan is passing through. We trust that conditions of normalcy will soon return permitting the transition to democracy and stability to continue,” the MEA spokesman said.

The Congress expressed hope that the turbulence in Pakistan would settle soon. “Whatever happens in Pakistan is always a matter of concern for us. We have been very anxious that democracy should emerge there,’’ said Veerappa Moily, AICC media department chairman.

The BJP asked the Centre to put pressure on Musharraf to restore democracy. The Left said it was a setback for democracy. CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat said: “The people of Pakistan will not support such an anti-democratic step.”

India "regrets"

U.S. is "disappointed"

Mild, obligatory expressions - no strong condemnation - actually, no outright condemnation...which leads me to wonder if we aren't all in this together, and we've got each others backs...and that without restrictions on Mushie - he can open up and get the job done on his side of the fence while we are at the ready with plenty of air/fire power on our side to stop the flow over the border into Afghanistan = Stop DEAD, I hope.

Maybe India is ready on their border as well.

Just maybe this will be a turning point regarding Binny Boy and the Pakistan/Afghanistan part of the WOT...am hoping it's the turn we want

It is really sad that we tolerate this kind of crap on one side while arguing for Democracy in the muslim world on the other.

There should be one policy - Democratization of the muslim world. Any short-term impact of that policy can be easily mitigated. Need a backbone and super patience.

“The people of Pakistan will not support such an anti-democratic step.”

Translation: Tribal, Muslim, sovereignty, trumps democracy.

Good reason to point out the many weaknesses in a democracy.

Pakistan: The first nuclear armed Muslim country.

Too bad the next opponent isn’t tribal North Western Pakistan, instead of Iran.
