That's all the more reason we should nip the practice of firing everyone who says an offensive off-the-cuff remark in the bud. Do you want to live in a world where you have to watch every word even when theoretically in private because your words could get you fired or otherwise punished? I don't.

That is the problem, nothing is private anymore. It's the paparazzi for the common man with everyone have camera cell phones or voice recorder MP3 players. Even still video or audio from one of these devices shouldn't be able to ruin someone's career if it was done in private.
Heck maybe the DOG can put a spin on his bounty hunter career and hunt down people with recorders and cameras and bait them to respond with vulgarities and then use said tape for ransom to blackmail them into keeping their careers unblemished if they called someone fat or ugly, or heaven forbid anything about "race".
