What, are you saying that pumping resources into a critical primary state over a period of time is the only reason that Romney is now surging in South Carolina, and if he continues will be the reason he wins the primary?
That sounds like you are saying that NOT participating for a year, and NOT pushing resources and time and effort into campaigning, could lead to people NOT supporting a candidate.
Anyway, I guess a year after the election, if Romney is no longer popular, you can explain why that’s important. Since so far as I can tell, the key to campaigning is to get the most people to vote for you on election day. And to do that, you spend money and time and effort, over a period of time.
I guess next november we can say “Romney spent 18 months pumping resources into the election and all he has to show for it is the Presidency”?
