Those whiners at State are an embarassment! If they don’t want to go they can quit their cushy GS positions and go get a real jay-oh-bee and stop living off our tee-ay-ex-ee-esses!
I agree. Get rid of every worthless diplomatic corps/State Dept toady who refuses to serve in Iraq..Why keep them? They are worse than useless.

Right, just like he listend when we asked him to stop allow illegal invaders to flood our shores ... when we asked him to stop expanding the welfare entitlement giveaway programs even further than Bill Clinton ever thought of doing ... when we asked him to defend Ramos and Compean ... and when we asked him to interdict Iran’s shipment of weapons across the border to kill our soldiers in Iraq. I like you optimism — but I have my doubts.
Fire them too.
I was listening to these people moaning on the radio today as I was watching people leaving their factory jobs down the street. Most of them would gladly switch places with these "reluctant Nellies" to get a good paying government job.
Okay not just a brilliant Idea for our courageous vets but a political bomb that will blow up in the faces of the dems if they don’t pass it.
As an active duty Foreign Service officer, I do believe in the “worldwide availability” nature of our profession. Most FSOs respect that requirement also. So far, to date, over a thousand FSOs have volunteered for duty in Iraq. This year marks the first time that any positions in Iraq have remained unfilled as the annual assignments season gets into high gear. The Department is indicating it may “direct” (order) non-volunteers into those positions if no more volunteers come forward. I think this is justifiable and should come as no surprise to anyone in the FS. The jobs are there; it’s important work; and the State Department needs to fulfill its commitments in Iraq as the US military has been fulfilling theirs.
I think my fellow Freepers should take the criticism levied at Director General Thomas yesterday with a grain of salt. The FS is accustomed to internal discussion and debate, and its true that it’s been a very long time since assignments were directed into an active combat zone. But I have no doubt that all (or almost all) FSOs that may end up being directed to Iraq will indeed go there. Sure, there’s a lot of criticism of Bush and Rice at the State Department, as there is throughout the foreign policy establishment in Washington (and that includes plenty of Republicans, folks). But the overwhelming majority of US professional diplomats are highly patriotic and mission-oriented, and they do view it as our duty to fill these posts in Iraq.
That’s the straight truth from inside the Foreign Service.
This really is a WOW. I wish you guys wouldn’t hit Thompson so hard, I don’t see how Hunter makes the presidential nomination. But think of Hunter as a strong (Cheney like) VP for 4 or 8 years then another 8 as President.
Excellent, he is the guy to clean up Foggy Bottom and it sure is due a good cleaning. If Hillary, Obama, Rudy, Fred, or Mitt had said this, you couldn’t pry the media away from this story with a crowbar. But see how far the story goes since it is Hunter.
A very good idea, I would take a Veteran with on the ground experience over a State Dept employee who lacks the courage and vision that Diplomacy in Irag requires.
Well who were these jackasses going public with their squawking. they’ve been all over the news. They need to be fired.

Rep. Hunter makes use of child labor
We aren’t sure whether Rep. Duncan Hunter’s grandson is going to be class president or bully bait — it could go either way.
Hunter (R-Calif.) recounted in the Sept. 27 GOP presidential debate that the child, who is also named Duncan and called “D-3” by his family, has picked up some questionable habits from his grandfather.
“He walked up to his first-grade teacher about a month ago, stuck his hand out, and said, ‘My name is Duncan Hunter … My grampa’s going to be president,’” the senior Hunter said. “And then this little 6-year-old looked his teacher right in the eye, and he said, ‘Now, can I count on your vote?’ ”
Nurse Amy Salud, one of a platoon of nurses thanking Hunter for cheering their patients, shakes his hand and says they have met before. On a previous hospital visit? asks the congressman. “No, at the Miss Philippines Pageant,” says Salud. Hunter puts on a Scrooge face. “Ah, yes,” he says, “the Miss Philippines Pageant. I didn’t win.” Salud laughs.
He hands her a House of Representatives pen. He hands another to a bedridden patient. Hunter bends over and half-whispers, “It’s a congressional pen. It writes only in red.” The patient laughs.

The difference, with all due respect, is that Hunter can stand on his 26 year legislative record and Fred can't stand on his only 6 year record.
It sure would start the State Dept. back in the right direction.
Win or lose the nomination, this idea is the most clear headed suggestion I have heard out of anyone in Washington since the Gipper left.
