A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 10-31-07

This morning President Bush spoke to business owners at the 2007 Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association Fall Conference in Washington.

“One of the reasons I've come by is to remind you how important you are to our economy… my philosophy is,I don't believe the role of government is to try to create wealth. It's to create the environment in which people are willing to risk capital, to expand their businesses”(Transcript)

The president again took this opportunity to urge Congress to “stop playing politics” and get back to work. The pressure seems to be working: Democrats have finally scheduled a confirmation vote for Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey next Tuesday, November 6. (He was nominated in September.)

Press Secretary Dana Perino: The President is disappointed in how long it has taken for the Senate to have a vote on his nomination. I believe this it longest ever that a nominee has waited for a vote out of committee. This on top of -- this comes after the United States Senate, from both sides of the aisle, said that this nominee, Judge Mukasey, was an excellent choice, an exceptional nominee, and that the Department of Justice was in desperate need of leadership. And therefore, the President would like to see this move very quickly. (Transcript)

Speaking of nominees, today President Bush nominated former North Dakota Governor Ed Schafer to be the next Secretary of Agriculture. (Transcript)

The president also signed The Internet Tax Freedoms Act of 2007 today in the Oval Office. This legislation will keep the Internet tax free through 2014. (Transcript)

First Lady Laura Bush spoke at the Preserve America/Save America's Treasures Legislation Announcement in Washington. (Transcript)

And in a news conference today at the State Department, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice announced that Karen Hughes will be stepping down as undersecretary.

Quote of the Day:

President Bush: I appreciate you having me for this fall conference. I'm thrilled to be a sitting President coming to visit with you. I didn't realize the last one was Eisenhower. I don't know if he came on Halloween -- (laughter) -- but I did. (Laughter.)

It's always an interesting day here in the Nation's Capital. This morning I was with the Vice President. I was asking him what costume he was planning. He said, well, I'm already wearing it. (Laughter.) Then he mumbled something about the dark side of the force. (Laughter.) He's doing well.

Photo of the Day:

Vice President Dick Cheney's Labrador retrievers Jackson, left, and Dave, right, prepare for Halloween, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, as they sit for a photograph at the Vice President's Residence at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. Jackson is dressed as Darth Vader, Dave is dressed as Superman.

“I think that, you know, the Republicans and their constant obsession
with me demonstrates clearly that they obviously think that, uh,
I'm communicating effectively about what I will do as president”

You got that right, Hillary

President George W. Bush delivers remarks at the 2007 Grocery Manufactures Association Fall Conference, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in Washington, D.C.

President Bush: I do want to thank you all very much for giving me a chance to come by. The White House is a nice place to live, but sometimes it's good to get outside the White House, to be with people who are actually making a living -- (laughter) -- that are creating jobs; that are taking risk; that are really, I hope, living the American Dream.

Laura sends her best. She's doing great. I am truly a lucky man to have married this great woman and I think the country is lucky to have her as the First Lady. (Applause.)

President Bush speaks at the 2007 Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association Fall Conference in Washington, October 31, 2007.

President Bush: There's a huge debate in Washington about cutting taxes... I believe when American families have more money in their pockets to save, invest, or spend, it helps keep the economy strong. I believe you can spend your money better than the federal government can spend your money.

… it's important for Congress not to unwind this process by trying to raise your taxes. And I'm going to use my veto pen to prevent them from doing so. (Applause.)

President Bush gestures while addressing the 2007 Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association Fall Conference, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2007, in Washington.

President Bush: I do want to spend some time on health care.

…Private coverage puts the medical decisions in the right hands, and that's between the patient and the doctor. And that's where the decisions in health care should be.

There's a different view in Washington. They believe -- those who have a different view [Democrats] believe that expanding federal control is the key to improving health care.

…The truth of the matter is, if you federalize health care, you're going to have to have a massive tax increase to pay for it.

For those who believe that, I would hope they would look around the world at other nations who have tried to nationalize their health care systems. I think what they would find is that socialized medicine has led to lower standards, longer waits, rationing of care.

President Bush speaks to the 2007 Grocery Manufacturers Association/Food Products Association Fall Conference, Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in Washington

President Bush: We're now 10 full months into 2007, and the United States Congress has yet to pass a single one of the annual spending bills of the federal government. Considering how eager they are to spend your money, it's shocking it's taken so long to do so. (Laughter.)

In fact, the leaders on Capitol Hill now hold a dubious record as the first United States Congress in 20 years that has failed to send a single annual appropriations bill to the President this late in the year. And time is running short. Members of Congress need to pass these annual spending bills soon, one at a time.

They should start by sending me a clean bill to fund our veterans by Veterans Day. I feel a special obligation to make sure that our veterans get the full support of the federal government. And Congress needs to stop wasting time and get that VA bill to my desk. (Applause.)

Mrs. Laura Bush speaks at the Preserve America/Save America's Treasures Legislation Announcement in Washington.

Unfortunately, Hillary Clinton was also at this ceremony (she founded Save America's Treasures when she was first lady--oh the irony!--so she had to be there today). But for our viewing pleasure, she has been cropped out of all these photos :-D

Mrs. Laura Bush delivers remarks Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at the Preserve America/Save America's Treasures Legislation announcement at the Sewall-Belmont House and Museum in Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Bush: President Bush and I appreciate the broad, bipartisan support Congress has shown for both Preserve America and Save America's Treasures. And I'm delighted that legislation is being introduced authorizing these two very important preservation programs. The new bill -- the "Preserve America and Save America's Treasures Act" -- will improve our ability to protect America's historic places, objects and collections. This legislation will authorize competitive grants under both programs, and help make sure that these two initiatives become a permanent part of our federal preservation efforts.

THANK YOU PRESIDENT BUSH . . .

Thank you for reviving our economy:
DESPITE THE GLOOM, MORE BUSH BOOMS
Solid third-quarter GDP adds another chapter to the greatest story never told.
By Larry Kudlow

If things are so bad, why are they so good?

With all the gloom coming out of Wall Street, the Democrats on the campaign trail, and the mainstream media, a remarkable thing just happened: Real gross domestic product, the best summary report of the American economy, came in at a breathtaking 3.9 percent annual rate for the third quarter. In fact, following the 3.8 percent growth rate for the second quarter, the U.S. economy has posted its strongest quarterly growth in four years. The economy actually appears to be speeding up, following the relatively sluggish performance of the prior 18 months.

On top of this, the inflation rate is actually slowing down. The consumer spending deflator is reading 2.1 percent for the past year, compared to over 3 percent six quarters ago. The core inflation rate is down to 1.9 percent, below the Fed’s 2 percent target.

Even employment is holding its own. According to Automatic Data Processing’s private employment survey, which showed its strongest gain in four months, October looks like it will produce about 125,000 new jobs.

Meanwhile, rising exports of American goods and services are booming to such an extent that the deep housing recession is being cancelled out. And while many continue to predict a consumer collapse because of falling home prices and tighter credit, after-tax inflation-adjusted income is 4.1 percent ahead of last year, for a $344 billion gain, while the purchase cost of energy prices are flat. The little noticed factoid is that consumer energy use per unit of GDP has actually fallen by more than 50 percent in recent decades.

Again: If things are so bad, why are they so good?

Thank you for your visionary (ADULT) leadership during a time of war:
Airing Now - Mike Moseley’s “WHAT IF BUSH AND THE REPUBLICANS ACTED LIKE DEMOCRATS?”
July 27th, 2007 Posted By Pat Dollard.

Alright readers, it’s time to be PatDollard.com Bloggers. I’d like everyone whose got that special rant in them to let loose for the world. Send me yours at submit AT patdollard.com, along with a photo, and I’ll post it on the front page as the latest featured Reader Post.

“There will never be a war that the Democrats will stand with the soldier on the battlefield again.”: Today’s most excellent piece was written by Staunton, Illinois reader Mike Moseley.

Many people would agree that the Democrats have supported Islamic terrorists by working against and supporting the defeat of the terrorist surveillance program and the money transfer program along with other activities such as
John Murtha {D PA} acted as judge and jury in the Haditha killings, to learn that the case has been ruled in favor of the Marines. Dick Durbin {D Il}compared our soldiers to soviet gulag guards and Hitler’s Nazis. Harry Reid
{D Ne} said that the war is lost. Nancy Pelosi {D Ca} and newly elected Keith Ellison {D MN} went to Syria, a state terror sponsor during a war against Islamic fascists. Keith Ellison compared the President to Hitler. Hillary Clinton {D NY} recently asked the Pentagon if they had a withdrawal plan ready, adding to enemy propaganda. Just this last week, the Democrats cut the “John Doe” amendment from recent homeland security legislation that would protect a
person from being sued if they witnessed and reported suspicious activity involving possible terrorism. The examples go on without end and the picture is clear.

. . . With every word from Sen Harry Reid, Rep Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Dick Durbin, Sen Chuck Schumer, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barak Obama the next generation of terrorists are born and motivated. The Democrat voice reinforces every word of Al-Qaeda and the terror organizations across the world. If America’s voice
spoke of victory and victory alone, this war would be over because radical Islam would NOT have a recruiting tool. The only thing that will save all from radical Islam are American values, Bush, and the GOP. To use the Democrat voice in issues concerning the war is to damn our nation to failure.

Thank you for having the courage to do the RIGHT thing vs. the politically expeditious thing:
COURAGE NEEDED TO DISARM IRAN
By Paul Johnson

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Whatever you may think of President George W. Bush and his record, there’s no denying him one character trait: courage. He has never been deterred from doing what he believes to be right by fear or nervousness. And courage, as we constantly need remind ourselves, is indispensable to successful statesmanship. It may be that Mr. Bush will need to display a supreme act of courage before leaving the White House: to decide what the U.S. response will be to Iran’s efforts to acquire an aggressive nuclear capability. This should not be left for Mr. Bush’s successor to deal with early in his or her presidency.

. . . For President Bush to grasp the nettle in such a way, and in good time, will take courage. But as we all know, courage is not a virtue he lacks.
