San Francisco is pulling out all the stops to prevent a party in the Castro tonight, including the unkindest cut of all - unleashing an army of tow trucks on hapless parkers.
Police posted scores of "No Stopping" special event signs on several blocks surrounding the traditional Halloween party zone Tuesday. And as soon as the parking restrictions go into effect, starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday, officers will be on hand to write up $60 parking citations and call in tow trucks for $250-get-out-of-hock bills.
The city Department of Parking and Traffic is putting 47 parking control officers on the streets, according to an internal agency memo we obtained.
Maggie Lynch of the Municipal Transportation Agency, which runs Parking and Traffic, disputed the size of the parking enforcement brigade. Whatever the number, she said, the three-wheelers will be there "to help with traffic and get blocked driveways cleared."
But even if the city manages to make things go smoothly tonight, the problem of what to do about Halloween will be far from solved.
"Next year it's on a Friday," said Supervisor Bevan Dufty, whose district includes the Castro and who crusaded to close the neighborhood to partiers after nine people were shot last year. "And there is no way that Halloween on a Friday is going to be a non-event. I have no illusion about that.
"In fact, I've already told the bars that I will not ask them to close next year."
