It depends on how it gets resolved. Check out the work Jim March has put into this issue.

The bottom line just might be that the local police and sheriffs have enough lobbying power to find a medium that would loosen the rules without totally removing the decision from their bureaus. The legislature couldn’t get away with writing a law that gives police, judges, politicians and political aids CCW permits, but nobody else. They’d need to come up with a uniform standard for granting them. In some places that might be more restrictive, in others more lax... but the cronyist system cannot stand, and it truly makes no sense that people in one county can get permits valid throughout the state thus allowing them to take their CWs into counties that grant virtually none. We have a double-double class system for permits that begs to be abused.

Oh, and it’s racist too.

Sure I’m dreaming a bit... but reform has to start somewhere.

I think they are out to get Mike Corona. I hope he can fight this/ and that it is bogus. He is a very clear=thinker, a manly man who says what he thinks. Obviously he has offended some. I hope this is trumped up AND that he fights it. I’d love to see him in California politics. (Any locals who know more about this? I’m in LA).

The more CCWs down here the better. The criminals, of course, have access to all sorts of firearms, but for those of us who just want to carry a gun for protection, it is very difficult. Of course he should give them away. It’s the Second Amendment.

I don’t believe the policy should come from Sacto. What? More bureaucracy? More control from the top? More chance that the libs would tighten it up and we would have to burn all guns. Should be written into law from the Feds and then allowed across the board in the whole country. Wait, it IS!! 2nd Amendment.

Their treasurer Chriss Street may be next. Street sure did a job on the people of Elba, AL and Dorsey Trailers.

“Of course the MSM has to mention that he is a Republican.”

I think it’s perfectly legitimate to mention the political affiliation of an elected official; I just wish that the media were as diligent in disclosing the political affiliation of Democrat elected officials who are accused of crimes.

the 52-year-old sheriff, who only five years ago was widely seen as a rising star in California Republican Party politics.

If he was a RAT, it would be excused.

Carona has always been good on CCW, from my understanding is that, under Carona, OC has been one of the easiest counties to get a CCW.

But even as he gained attention in the political realm, Carona was
coming under attack from critics who accused him of improper management
and ethical lapses.

If the charges are factual, the major crime Carona is guilty of is...
thinking he could get away with the stuff Democrats do all the time.

I hope Carona convincingly "beats the rap".
He was a good "frontman" for the effort to track down that killer
of the little girl a couple of years back.

The Orange County Register reported in April 2003 that Orange County sheriff's helicopters had been used as flying limousines at least 16 times in the past year, zipping sheriff Mike Carona, his staff and others to award ceremonies, television interviews, the airport and a Lake Arrowhead retreat. "In 2003, while still on the job, the Register reported, Jaramillo paid $241 to the county after it was discovered he had used a department helicopter for a trip from Mission Viejo to the Long Beach Airport with his wife, Lisa.

Jaramillo said that trip was investigated and addressed, and he shouldn't be charged with any improprieties.

Jaramillo alluded to rumors of another helicopter ride, this one involving Carona and what Jaramillo said was the sheriff's "longtime mistress.""

Sounds like this Carona guy is as clean as the driven snow. Nothing to see here, move along.......

As a former resident of the OC, active in CCW issues, and a former OC CCW holder, it’s my understanding that Carona did, in fact, make CCWs easier to get in the early part of his first term. After that, however, those that did not donate to, or otherwise support, him after getting a CCW, did not have their CCWs renewed, and new applications were rejected at a rate similar to LA. This is based on anecdotal evidence (which I admit isn’t really evidence at all, but it’s all I got).

In the last race for OC Sheriff, one of the candidates, Jim Hunt, ran on a campaign program to make OC truly “shall issue.” Mr. Hunt was defeated in the polls, then allegedly illegally retaliated against by Mr. Carona for daring to run against him.

Just some more information about the politics of CCW in the OC.

Nothing Corona does/did raises to the level of that corrupt sheriff in adjoining San Bernardino County (the one who stole 1,000+ guns from the evidence locker), plus he'd use the departmental aircraft to go deer hunting in Colorado + a ton of other stuff. But, both he and his flunky Jarmillo are of Hispanic heritage and left the Reservation of the "D" Party.

Both were put on notice by the Republicans there, they'd be under the gun, but in both cases, the small head did the thinking.

Whoever did the vetting of these guys for the Bureau is prolly on their way to BFE.

Both were legendary "hounds", and any courthouse flunky could have told the investigator that.

Don't anyone waste a moment of sympathy for Corona, he did it all to himself.

Yeah but they threw the book at Tidwell, oh well maybe having all the felonies reduced to misdemeanors and given 3 years of probation isn’t exactly getting the book thrown at you. I’m sure that the judge would have treated any of us the exact same way. </sarc>

Interesting. I grew up in Orange County (Orange, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach) back in the 60’s and 70’s. I was initially pleased to hear that Carona was CCW friendly, but I hadn’t heard the other part of the story. Thanks for enlightening me.

Somebody needs to write a book on all of the scandals surrounding Carona. Jaramillo, Haidl. Then the guy who got the CCW and used his gun to threaten somebody on the golf course. Another gun that showed up in the possession of the Uppsula Mafia guy that crashed his Ferrari. I can’t remember them all, but there is lots of great material to work from.

LOL!

Plus the Fed's let him slide on the machine gun beef.

You know there's still almost a thousand missing guns? Word on the street: they went to Nicaragua. It's a strong possibility, in Cali there are no private party sales; all firearms have to go thru NCIC and not one of the missing guns has ever hit.

Sheriff Carona, his wife and his mistress named in the indictment.

Hadl wore a wire in one meeting which Carona tried to persuade him not to testify truthfully to the grand jury

"... particular to allegations that he had issued badges and concealed-weapons permits to campaign contributors without proper training or background checks"

And this would make them more dangerous than the proper trained people we see everyday in the news?
