The destroyer USS Porter enters port at Souda Bay, Greece, in 2006.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. Navy warship fired on and sank two skiffs used by pirates Sunday to hijack a merchant vessel off the coast of Somalia, U.S. officials said Monday.

< >

At the request of Somalia's government, a second U.S. warship, the destroyer USS Arleigh Burke, is now shadowing the merchant ship inside Somali waters, the officials said.

In recent years, warships have stayed outside the 12-mile limit when chasing pirates.

I don’t. We help them with their problem and they’ll help us with ours. Sounds fair to me.

Do you mean ordinance, as in law or ordnance, as in weapon-fire?

Every time you see the US GQ Generals sending F16s with $100,000 JDAMS out to kill three Taliban or AQ you are watching the enemy win a fight.

A JDAM costs less than $20,000. It costs a lot less to deliver one JDAM than it does to send in B-52's to carpet bomb.

I suspect you were thinking of Komrad Klinton’s action and came up with “Blackhawk Done”.

If these are the same pirates that were involved with this Japanese ship, it seems like it’s not just a case of us following the request of the Somali government, but the U.S. coming to the aide of our Japanese ally.

From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli...

We got into the power projection business under TR to deal with Barbary pirates. The tradition continues.

Plus, it provides some warm up for the navy for dealing with the Iranians in the gulf. Our tactics if we go after Iran over their nukes will be:

  1. B2 and F117 (or are the F117s all retired?) strikes on key parts of the Iranian nuclear program along with Revolutionary Guard and Al Quds infrastructure
  2. Anti runway cluster bombs taking out all of their air capability, including commercial
  3. Sink every one of their boats in the gulf "with extreme prejudice"
  4. Seal their ports
  5. Destroy their gasoline refineries
  6. Repeat as necessary
And then we sit in the gulf and wait.  If they try to attack with missiles we take out the entire area where they launch from with area denail weapons.  The main thing we have to fear is if they've managed to obtain a nuke, say a left over from the break up of the Sovient Union, and can place it as a mine someplace like the Straights of Hormuz, waiting for one of our carrier battle groups.

Please forgive me for not being more clear.

You are correct the unit price for the JDAM guidance system alone is estimated to be around $20,000...

I made the mistake when referring to the cost not to refer to all costs to deliver including the munition, Aircraft and logistical support

$100,000 I believe to be a low estimate per JDAM delivered.

http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?tp=&arnumber=332903&isnumber=7851

The salient point.

Do you disagree or agree to the assertion that we can bankrupt ourselves and lose this war by spending Billions while our enemy spends but a few millions in the same time frame? In effect handing the enemy a victory because we cannot economically sustain the fight.

Yeah, they changed the title and filled in some details. But it’s their story and their prerogative.

The Navy wasn't "requested" to perform tricks for the Somali government. They requested that the U.S.A. Navy provide "cover" for a ship after some sort of engagement occured.

Apparently the U.S.A. government complied with the request by the Somali "government".
