Huckabee stirs up third-party fear
The Washington Times ^ | October 29, 2007 | Ralph Z. Hallow

A bitter fight is taking place behind the scenes over Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee.

Influential conservatives are clashing over whether Mr. Huckabee is capable of keeping evangelicals from fleeing the GOP to form a third party or if he's too liberal fiscally for the Republican electorate.

The battle is bubbling into the public arena, fueled by fears that a three-way race could hand the presidency to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton or another Democrat, and by murmurs of Mr. Huckabee as a vice-presidential candidate on the party's ticket.

"We called him a pro-life, pro-gun liberal, when I was in the state legislature and he was governor," said Randy Minton, chairman of the Arkansas chapter of Phyllis Schlafly's national Eagle Forum.

Mr. Minton voices the concerns of many conservatives that while Mr. Huckabee governed as a social conservative in opposing abortion and same-sex "marriage," he was a treacherous liberal on taxes, social welfare spending and illegal immigration.

Maybe that could be phrased better; no *significant* difference. Castro wasn’t as bad as Stalin, but they were still both murderous thugs.

I don’t see why more people cannot get behind someone with zero doubts of whether or not they have the so-called conservative credentials, like a Hunter or a Tancredo.

I’m honored that you or anyone for that matter actually care who I endorse. I really haven’t made up my mind yet.

Don’t worry, there will be a big announcement on FR sometime in December:”FReeper Eric Blair Presidential Endorsesement; Live Press Conference Thread”.

I’ll be sure to ping you to it.

With that last paragraph, I agree with you. Now, to get to that guy without allowing the Hildabeast win is the problem!

Nobody in the GOP really positioned themselves properly years ago to make a run besides McCain. And he did it poorly by catering to the MSM.

Somebody like Hunter or Tancredo has to run for Governor or hope to get a VP nod in order to position themselves as a legitimate contender in the future.

I wouldn’t mind Hunter taking on Boxer the next time she is up. Arnold is also thinking about that matchup. Tancredo could take on Salazar in the Colo. Senate race.

Oh, puhleeze, like the Huckster is significant enough to form a third party! Only in the wet dreams of people like Arthur Sulzberger.

That would be a promotion to Senate. But if a candidate was looking to seriously position him or herself for a run at President, it helps to have Executive experience. VP or gov.

And it would also be important that their policies and decisions reflect those of the base they will need to win in a primary. That might be a problem for Hunter in the liberal DPRCA.

He would become a total sellout like Ahnold.

Huckster means well. He’s a liberal do gooder. I wish he would just go away quietly and retire to do charity work and start foundations.

He’s certainly not going to get the nomination no matter how much the MSM tries to pimp him. My fear like I said, is that the GOP would be dumb enough to think that a pro life, gun baptist minister would take some of the stench off of Rudy and make Huckster the VP on the ticket if Rudy gets the nomination.
