I knew about both Hoover and Grant. I should have been more specific when I first commented. What I meant to explain was concerning more recent history. From JFK until today, each president has been a VP or governor.

The executive experience and winning a statewide race seems to help candidates get elected president. Numerous Senators have run but none has done very well, if my memory serves.

We have one called a “forever” stamp...but, that only came out when the postage was increased to .41, as far as I know that is the first time we have ever had a stamp that carried over no matter the increase.

To me, the WOT is WWIII. The past wars on drugs or poverty were jokes and abused the name of war. In this case, I believe we really are at war with Islamic fascists on a worldwide scale, thus qualifying as WWIII. Iran, were it to happen would be a WWIV, IMHO, as we would be fighting other countries instead of the influence these Muslims have.

That’s how I view it anyway.

And when Cynthia McFadden showed it on Nightline, she made a snarky comment instead of just letting it stand as newsworthy.

They have this automatic compulsion to go to the coarsest, lowest levels .. can’t help themselves.

I believe the thinking American public are beginning to get it, please God.

It’s so obvious they’re overdoing it, pounding the airwaves with their disdain and negativity 24/7 and reasonable people finally, naturally, begin to get cynical.

I was, you’re right. I was also wrong in thinking Ford was in the Senate. Sorry to mislead.

My comments referred to more current times, not going back to when candidates were brokered in back rooms by party bosses etc. I was thinking more along the line of since Eisenhower, who was military, and then Kennedy from the Senate, each president since then has been either a past VP or governor.

The only people I write to are those who want money, and maybe they thought it was worth paying the postage to get it. (smile)

We are not ready to conceed CO to the Democrats just yet. The US Senate Dem candidate is the US Rep from Boulder which is just about as liberal as CO can get. The GOP candidate is a past US Rep, who signed a pledge to retire after three terms and he did that instead of going against what he promised to do. The Republican is Bob Schaffer and CO will be interesting to see if we Republicans can win again. CO has more Republicans than Democrats but we have not nominated very conservative candidates in the past few years.

There's lots of formulations out there. Jerry Pournelle has argued for a long time that what we normally call "the cold war" was only one segment in "the 70 years war," and he considers it WW3. That would make the war with islamofascism WW4.

Norman Podhoretz has a new book, World War IV: The Long Struggle Against Islamofascism, which follows this formulation.  By the way, it looks like a good book.  It's got the libtards all in a huff.

Of course, in my mind, the first world war started over 1300 years ago and this is just a new manifestation of that conflict.

Why would getting into war with Iran not be part of the war with islamofascism? They've been waging a declared war on us since their revolution. We've just chosen to pretend that they really didn't mean it.

I thought Laura Bush was great with her Chris Matthews interview today. What a contrast with the HRC scripted and evasive interview several weeks ago. Laura made a point of giving the US taxpayers credit for good works abroad and her husband, Pres GWB, credit for initiating and facilitating her trips to various countries. She really sparkled when Chris asked her about voting for a woman President. Said she would vote for a woman but differed on a number of issues with the one currently running for President. Emphatically and cheerfully said she would be voting REPUBLICAN. I liked her discussion of helping the women she met with and how she effectively addressed the scarf gift from those women who had been breast cancer survivors. She was nicer than I would have been about those who are straining to find something, anything, to grouse about this week. She also spoke about the SCHIP controversy, saying it was political, and a number of states now provide it for more adults than children and that the President was right to keep the money for those children who need it. She covered a lot more and IMO came across as a very great Republican asset who will do our party tremendous good this campaign season.
