Jury: Lisa Montgomery should be executed [killing expectant mother and cutting baby from her womb]

Jurors unanimously agreed today that Lisa Montgomery should be put to death for killing Bobbie Jo Stinnett and stealing her unborn daughter nearly three years ago.

Before the decision ending the four-week trial was announced about 12:35 p.m., the federal judge ordered spectators to control their emotions or leave the Kansas City courtroom.

The jurors convicted Montgomery late Monday afternoon of kidnapping resulting in death. After taking a break Tuesday, they returned Wednesday to begin the penalty phase. They deliberated about an hour Thursday before breaking for the night and returning this morning.

Montgomery tried to claim Stinnett’s baby as her own after cutting the girl from her mother’s womb in Skidmore, Mo., in December 2004 and taking the baby home to Melvern, Kan.

This case made national headlines. While I am unable to watch all the cable networks today when I did tune I saw nothing of the story.

This was a horrific crime, at least there was justice by sentencing Montgomery to death. Of course it will be years before her sentence is carried out. There will be appeals and the victim's family will have to relive this each and every time.

My heart aches for the Stinnett family.

Article doesn’t mention it, but I heard on the radio today that there are no plans for appeal.

Not my usual military posting but this did make headlines when she committed the crime and I think the outcome should be given time as well.

The article says:

Her defense team unsuccessfully tried to convince the jury that she was insane at the time of the slaying. They had argued that Montgomery suffered from pseudocyesis — the delusional belief that she was pregnant — as well as from post traumatic stress disorder.

I suppose a defense team must come up with something, I did not sit through the trial I just cannot imagine any evidence that would support this theory at least based on the pretrial news report's. Of course we know how accurate they can be?

I was unable to listen to the radio, actually it was my beloved who sent me the verdict via email and he is in Iraq.

I believe that all D/P cases have automatic appeals. I think the convicted could request to not have them, but, of course the ACLU would come charging in saying the prisoner is nut's for wanting to skip all the court proceedings and go straight to punishment.

Anybody have any idea how long this piece of trash can expect to sit around watching t.v. and enjoying 3 squares before she gets to ride the joy juice to hell? Is Missouri like California in terms of application of the death penalty in terms of time from conviction to death?

If she were a man, maybe. But when was the last time you heard of a woman being killed in prison by other inmates. It just isn't something women do.
