Public service employees -- federal workers, soldiers, nurses, firefighters and others -- will have an opportunity to qualify for student loan forgiveness under a law signed by President Bush yesterday. The law forgives outstanding education debt for public service employees who have made 10 years of monthly payments on their loans while serving full-time in government, public education or other positions related to public service.

Are we sure it isn’t worded for illegals like their in-state tuition rates?

Look at reply #13 two below your reply and you will see this. ¿

Which language uses upside down question marks in front of the first word of the question? I think you answered the question.

I believe that this loan forgiveness applies to any government employee, not just government employees. I also understand that there is no means testing on loan forgiveness. This law perpetuates the myth of the poorly paid government employee. Compensation in the public sector on average is substantially higher than the private sector. When job security is factored, there are a substantial advantages to public employment.

The only catch on loan forgiveness is tax liability. As the law stands now, loan forgiveness triggers a tax liability. I suspect that the rats will change the law when loan forgiveness begins.

This law is just another entitlement. The rat plan is to make higher education an entitlement at least for government workers.

college tuition just got cut for those who have friends who can get them government jobs.

Tuition will go up because “the government is paying”.

If this is going to be the case, then they should just go ahead and make student loans dischargable in bankrupcy,

Give me a break. Bush is to blame, either he is the president or he’s not. He should of veto this bill because of principle not in spite of it. Bush has no problem spending our money, I guess since he came from a wealthy family and never had to make money to survive he doesnt understand the true value of a dollar. Sad commentary on this president who had so much potential and squandered it.

BTW, this happened a month ago.

Yup, when I saw 28th was thinking of Oct...but it is still valid to post as it is an unnecessary entitlement, IMO.

I resent this. Why do federal employees, congresspersons, etc. get superior benefits to the rest of us?

The rest of us are paying for it and it is NOT fair.

This isn’t sad, it’s infuriating.

My sons have done more for this country by entering the private sector than any GDamn postal worker EVER will!

Wonder how this law would hold up to a 14th Amendment challenge?

It wouldn’t be a free ride.

It would be a taxpayer-funded ride and a ride funded by students who will repay those loans through higher interest rates.

That wasn’t meant as a dig at all.

Here’s a thread from back then. The article and some of the replies shed a little more light on this.

I should have taken out some loans and went to a better school. I could get a menial job as a govt slug and then wrote off the debt. The amount written off will more than offset the salary differnce I would have gotten if I applied my self at a real job.
