Nature setting lures controversy

Area's wooded terrain becomes contested ground for 2 groups at odds: Bird-watchers and gay men seeking sex

Luis Munoz, an avid bird watcher of 12 years, has seen a remarkable range of rare winged creatures this fall migration season, including the Nelson's sharp-tailed sparrow and the red knot.

He also has come face to face with one species he hopes never to encounter again but knows he will: the Chicago cruiser.

As sure as Munoz and his fellow birders can find an array of lovely birds in the area's most densely wooded spots, they also routinely find men trolling for casual sex.

This has become a problem for me. There is a park where many unusual birds flock that I like to photograph. The Audobon Society maintains a feeder there. I'd like to walk with my long lens down those trails, but it is also a known cruising area. The police have tried to clear it out due to complaints, but I'm not real confident they have it under control.

My fear is that if I stumble across some human sexual activity, they will assume I have come to photograph them, and could attack me and/or take and damage my camera. So I stay away. As have others who don't want their children exposed to it.

This is not a park in Chicago, and I have already had another incident there. But I got some great photos of pelicans which I didn't think we had here, probably a brief stopover in the fall, so in the end, it was worth it.

Even if they are driven out of there for good, they will just find another spot and annoy others; there is already one I know about. I'm also afraid I could stumble across a drug deal, but I try not to let my fears completely rob me of the enjoyment of my hobby. My son also voiced concerns when he saw some photos I had taken in isolated areas, also a threat of dogs. And I don't dare stray deep into wooded areas alone. Usually I stay close to a public road.

"Historically, these charges have been used as discrimination against homosexuals," said Jon Erickson, a Chicago lawyer who has defended cruising suspects. "I've never seen a straight couple charged with public indecency in Branch 29 court."

Probably because they don't make a regular habit of engaging in promiscious sex in public places ... duh!

Crying discrimination in this case is like saying laws against bank robbery discriminate against people who rob banks. “I’ve never seen a single non-bank robber prosecuted”

prime hook-up spots

ahhh - ho-key

Problem is country wide - in parks, rampant in roadside rest stops (they practically consider rest stops their private domain, etc.

Go ahead, you politicians and homosexual defenders, it will only get worse and worse.

If you think the obscene gay parades in San Francisco with the nudity and open, public sex acts on the sidewalks will be confined for long to San Francisco, you are naive...and they trade on that.

How long before the parade in NYC degenerates into that - it hasn't far to go.

Can you differentiate what is going on in San Francisco, the parks, the rest areas and rest rooms, etc,. from Sodom and Gomorrah? And they are going after our children hardcore.

Read your history books. The great societies declined rapidly once these practices became condoned...

If we acquiesce and let the libs and these deviates destroy the Traditional values our country was founded on, we will reap the whirlwind. Indeed, the funnel is building on the horizon.

If our country looses it's soul - it will be doomed.

I would like ONE candidate to stand tall and say: "This line must be drawn!" And the gays will come out, snarling and threatening and there will be a great gnashing of teeth (fangs) and those in the public that still think these people are just regular ordinary decent folk, will get a good look.

The gay population is not nearly as large a percentage as they like to claim. They are loud and obscene and get the press, but they are only about 2% - Even if you inflate that to 5% - any candidate who took them on head on would m ore than make up that number by people who would vote for them on this issue alone.

So let it be said. So let it be done.

I know these types of places exist in most large cities, but its just gross. They dump their used junk without a care and expect everyone to just look away... please. Go to your gay bars and Babs concerts and get infected all you want, just stay away from the rest of us.

How about those gaiting rump rangers? I see them from time to time cavorting around the restrooms in parks.

As an avid mountain biker I have come across gay sex-having men several times. Nothing ruins my day like seeing naked gay men out in the widerness.

Then I moved to Houston and I thought the problem was solved. Wrong. The big park in town hosts an array of them. It's easy to tell who is the bird-watcher and who is the guy looking for gay sex: the bird watcher says "hi", whereas the gay sex-seeker says "Heyy therrre!", kinda like Big Gay Al would say it.

Gays complain that they want people to “Stay out of our bedrooms!” I suggest they go back to those bedrooms.

There is a park in Tempe, Arizona that is notorious for homosexual restroom sex. At one time the "C" was actually stolen from the name of the park on the sign out front. The name of the park is Canal Park. I kid you not.

My sympathies to you. Get a CC and a .380 and enjoy your life.

I am thinking about it. I'm worried about weight. My camera gear is quite heavy; I am getting older. I would feel a lot safer, hope I never had to use it, and be able to go further on hiking trails by myself. Taking someone is an option, but people are busy, and having someone along unless they shared my hobby would be distracting.

I wasn't looking for sympathy, but figured I'd speak up about how some people are affected by it.

The other poster said something about heterosexuals. They used to get hassled, too, with a stern warning if they were acting inappropriately in a public place. I think they stopped short of arrests though (depending, have heard of some so outrageous there were arrests); so much more is tolerated than used to be.

Whatever they do, I just wish they would get a room or do it at home. For some reason, they prefer cruising, maybe it's more exciting and expedient. The instant gratification thing seems to be a factor.

A .380 auto is very compact and light (< 4 lbs. loaded) and made for small people (women). With hollow points, it does a good job in stopping a perp. Just get a nylon waist band holster and wear it on your left side under a light jacket if you are right-handed.

You have just as much right to enjoy your hobby as the next person and shouldn't have to endure being subjected to public display of perversion. Many cruisers are simply fag / tranny prostitutes supplying a drug habit.

I hope I never ever have to take another human being's life, even the above-mentioned type, but when threatened, no problem.

Be careful and stay safe.

I'm now trying to figure out how to safely remove a woodpecker that has drilled a hole into the side of my house on the gable end and made its home about 18ft up from the ground. Any suggestions? I got to cover the hole and get him to move on before the squirrels figure the way in to the attic. Otherwise, 'bang' with the pellet rifle.

That doesn't sound like too much extra weight then. Thanks for the info.

The woodpecker is a problem. They peck at my house because it has cedar shingles, usually they are just looking for insects. The only real trouble they've given me (and maybe it was some other bird) is more than double the size of a birdhouse entry hole I have tacked on the front of the house, looks bad, but birds still nest in it.

Covering the hole is a good start, but concealing the patch and painting it I don't envy you, especially that high up. Maybe you can scare it off by shooting close to it. I'd sure hate to shoot one of those birds, but they can be a problem. Haven't had any lately come to think of it. I've gotten a few shots (photography) of one last year, but none quite good enough. When I try to catch them on the house, they spook easily, and if they're in a tree, leaves obscure them or it is one of those nasty white sky days.

Good luck in getting rid of that woodpecker. I go to extraordinary lengths to protect birds around my place, then took in a stray tomcat that likes to go outside. I found a dead baby cardinal, made me almost ill. But cats will be cats. I don't want another strictly indoor cat and don't want to get him neutered unless I have to.

Off to do some errands.

I constantly feed the birds during the winter and early spring. The downy woodpecker is the culprit at this time on the house. I also have a pair of red-shoulder hawks that hang around a lot feeding on the rabbits, snakes, voles and squirrels at times. Sometime they even lite on the railing on the back deck and just sit there. I just sit on the couch, sip coffee and look at them through the patio doors no more than 15-20 ft away. They're beautiful and about 28 inches tall.

I also love the yellow bellied woodpeckers, the cardinals, blue birds, doves, black-capped chickadees, goldfinches, sparrows, warblers and wrens that all frequent the feeder. Plus Chip and Dale (the dang squirrels).

The birds 'fuss' at me in the winter daytime if I let the feeder go dry. LOL!

I'm an old gramma - and a few years ago I had an encounter in my favorite remote pond/forest area...I stayed away from it for a long time as well as other places I like - then I said to myself: "Wait a dang minute. These places don't belong to the scum - and letting them intimidate us to stay away is giving in to them and they, then, rule by default.

Nosir!, " I continued to myself: "Ain't gonna stop going to the places I enjoy.!"

Went got a 'carry' - haven't had to "show" it yet - but I bet I wouldn't be the one backing down.

We need to assert our rights - let them know they don't own the parks and rest stops etc - let them get their own dark spots for their darkest of deeds, and get out of our tax paid places...Same with colors. They've Appropriated the rainbow and lavender and now encroaching on pink.

Guess what? they don't OWN colors! And I will keep using them!

I feed them year round, have switched to no shell mix because I guess the sunflower seeds poison the soil, and I want to plant something where I have fed them for years. I also put out fresh water almost every day for them.

My son got a nice shot of a hawk, he is further out and has had a cedar waxwing and finches, lots of deer. Mostly I get sparrows, baby owls two years in a row, got a nice shot of a baby chickadee (won money on my owl and chickadee shots), crows, cardinals, doves, a few odd ones, house finch I think for one. My woodpecker was the yellow-bellied one.

How fortunate you are to have the blue birds and gold finches and other birds I seldom see! I just ordered a hummingbird feeder, saw my first pair since I was a kid this summer swooping down and feeding on some salvia I grew from seed. They come in real close even if you are standing right there, but no time to grab my camera and set it right.

That's cute about the birds fussing at you. I had the blue jays kind of trained to call me for their morning peanuts, they got so they would come in real close, but never too close. I had some squirrel and chipmunk pals that I finally got to eat from my hand, but haven't had the time to make friends with them for awhile, and my old pals are now deceased, don't live long. I've got a picture of Flag (black with a white tip of my tail) who jumped on the screen door when it was hungry. Clipper chewed a hole through the screen and got in my house then panicked, he finally found his way out. I found him dead in the street finally, also Goldie, a red fox? squirrel, my favorite squirrel breed.

Fun to share critter stories. I need to go after some eagles, haven't gotten any yet. Deer either, and there are tons around here.
