U.S. sailor shoots two female colleagues on Bahrain base in 'love triangle' killings

Last updated at 17:04pm on 22nd October 2007

A U.S. Navy sailor allegedly shot and killed two female sailors early Monday on a U.S. military base in Bahrain, a Navy official said.

Initial reports suggest the shooting was the result of a "love triangle," according to a State Department official.

The alleged shooter, a male, was critically wounded in the incident in the barracks on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base.

Fortress: The shootings took place at the U.S. naval base in Bahrain

The shootings took place around 2am, the Navy has said. Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it about an hour after the incident.

The two women were pronounced dead at the scene, and the man was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

No other details were immediately available, and the Navy said it was not releasing the names of those involved until their families were notified.

"The incident is under investigation, and it would not be prudent to discuss details at this time," said Navy spokesman Lt. John Gay.

Bahrain, a tiny island nation on the Persian Gulf, is a U.S. ally and home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, which is responsible for an area of about 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million sq. kilometres) of water including the Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman and parts of the Indian Ocean.

About 3,600 personnel work on the U.S. Naval Support Activity Bahrain base, located just outside Bahrain's capital, Manama. The base supports U.S. naval ships in the region.

Regardless of the apparent fact that the women have fewer emotional issues,

WHAT???

WHAT???

Read the post I was responding to. I just accepted the information she posted, because I have no way to know otherwise. Besides, that wasn't the real point.

That statement just really caught me off guard because it is so wrong on so many levels. In fact when I got to it I skipped the rest of your post.

The Demoralization of the Military

For a demoralized military it's been doing pretty well for itself in Afganistan and Iraq.

Why Christian Women Should not Join the Military: A Plea from a Woman Veteran

Then why did she join in the first place? Sameless, sinful hussy!

“Then why did she join in the first place? Sameless, sinful hussy!”

Do you stop and think before you speak? Perhaps she was not a Christian at the time she joined the military. Perhaps she became a Christian during her time in service. This was my case, and it changed many of my choices, plans and ambitions.

She may have become a Christian later, and married and had children, and then began to put these things together for her own duaghters. It may be that she had to stop and recall her time in service and put all of that under the light of the Scriptures.

I get the idea that you just WANT to find a reason to call this woman a “shameless, sinful hussy!”

You are the shameless one!

“I also saw women in maintenance divisions (MM, BT, etc.) who didn’t do the heavy lifting. This made more physical labor for the men and less desk work. (Desk work on the sub was something you busted your @ss to get, but women on surface ships got it just by being female.)”

You are correct! I was in Air Force civil engineering squadrons. We had women in each shop. I was NCOIC of the structural shop. I told the women that they could no more sit and wait on the men to load their tool boxes and gear. If it is too heavy, then we need to go talk to the commander about why you are in your job.

This brought me days and days of grief! This brought me sessions at the equal opportunity office where they told me I must change my attitude.

Always.

Perhaps she became a Christian during her time in service.

Did she immediately demand to be released from the service on religious grounds?

This was my case, and it changed many of my choices, plans and ambitions.

And would you agree with her contention that your fellow female service members were somehow sinful or less of a Christian than you?

I get the idea that you just WANT to find a reason to call this woman a “shameless, sinful hussy!”

Yeah, it's called sarcasm. It's called being disgusted that she would pass judgement on others and consider female servicemembers as unchristian or somehow less Christian than she is. If she's somehow ashamed of her service and feels that being in the military was somehow sinful then that's her problem. Don't go dissing those women who chose to serve when she and her offspring won't.

“The options are to either a) accept the problems which both the men and women endure in the military and continue on, or b) reexamine the decision to deploy women in combat roles along side men.”

Since this incident took place in the barracks, it’s safe to assume none of the three sailors involved was stationed on a ship, involved in combat nor in a combat zone. They were three sailors stationed on a small, relatively isolated base overseas.

The root of the problem lies in the fact that the military demographic is the demographic of young, healthy men and women who are awash in hormones and extremely interested in pursuing relationships with the other sex. With roughly 1.4 million men and women under arms, the vast majority of them in their late teens, twenties, and early thirties, it’s a wonder the military accomplishes its mission as well as it does. Any organization that large will have some bad apples, and the chain of command isn’t going to catch all of them before tragedies happen.

I believe the military is doing what it can. Studies are ongoing, education is ongoing, planning is ongoing, but frankly, not every problem has a good solution and I think this is one of them.

sorry for your loss, but these murdered young women deserve better than to be called idiots, let alone start the "women are bad " thread here on FR...

my mom was a WW2 vet, so I am a little sensitive to calling women WHO KNOWN OF US KNOW..... idiots....

women wouldn't be needed in the military if enough men would volunteer....

these women could have been enjoying themselves living the good life in America but chose instead to be American sailors.....

God bless them, love triangle or not.....

Women may not belong in combat but the soldier who killed the two women on that base is a murderer and should be put on trial if he lives.

And who disagrees with that?

Looks like Navy marksmanship has improved.

My point is that given the demographics of the military and the fact that there are not enough male volunteers to man the force, women and men have to serve together. It is unavoidable. My impatience is with those who will not accept that reality and offer simplistic, unworkable, feel-good solutions like, “just send ‘em home.”

That is not the reason women are being put closer to combat situations, it is done in the name of career equality.

This nation has always found enough men to keep its military going without putting men and women together in situations that undermine moral and discipline.

"Women should serve if they wish in more traditional roles not mixed with men aboard ship or in combat."

I suppose that would apply to all the female NURSES who have medicated, and bandaged, and sewn up and taped and resuscitated and held hands and comforted the hundreds of thousands of soldiers thru the years that have been injured in war.....

I am sure those nurses have seen and handled and washed and bandaged and whatever else to hundreds of thousands of man parts thru the years.....

the diatribe against women continues.....

I hope the space shutte doesn't crash....its "manned" by women....

That sounded like it could have come from a Muslim. Just replace the Bible references with the appropriate Quran references and tell the women to get back barefoot in the kitchen.

What did the post say that was incorrect? That women are different then men and should be treated as such?

That is why we do have separate restrooms in public areas, so women can have some privacy and retain their modesty.

Feminism hates femininity.

Okay, I am missing something here. I scrolled down about 3/4 of the page and no one else hit on it so I will...

“Love Triangle” and the shooter was the male... So, does this mean he walked in on the two women as they were engaged in... ummmmm... “Cleaning their Carpets” let’s phrase??

How would this have gone down if the male got that pissed off??

Speculation of course....
