THe Firestorms Must be Stopped BEFORE they BEGIN

The forest-fire prevention plan of President Bush’s that the environmental organizations label as nothing more than an invitation to the evil loggers may care which politicians get elected to office, but their effort to stop reasonable logging in our national forests shows they don’t care if the forests burn down, how much lumber and wood products we import from countries without good environmental protections, or if your kids and grand kids will be able to afford their own houses.

Our forests are dying, and the environmental frauds—the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and parts of the U.S. Government—are the ones doing the damage.

ome of the best examples of the damage being done to the public forests can be found in Northern California. Over the past several years, large, unnaturally large fires have wiped out vast stretches of forest in Plumas and Lassen Counties. Just four of these fires have damaged or destroyed over 130,000 acres, leaving over 100 million board feed of dead timber that could be logged and used to build homes and other essentials—instead of cutting green trees that are supporting wildlife. This simple, intelligent act is the “salvage logging” that the eco-fraud organizations have (wrongly) criticized and prevented from occurring.

As the Clintonistas said, “It will take you years to undo what we’ve done”.

I can’t agree with you more.

If the people of California would come to their senses. They would clear brushes and tend to the grounds around them. Heck they pay for all those illegal Mexican landscapers. so why don’t they have them do some. work for a change.
The State of California has ;loads of prisoners. Put them to work clearing the area where there could be wildfires.
Oh, I forgot that would be harsh and cruel punishment. But it’s better than having them just lift weights in the prison yard. Perhaps a little hard labor would do them good.

A thousand years ago the natives in California burned off the underbrush regularly so they could harvest acorns:

Apparently, both of you are ignorant of the Southern California terrain which is burning currently. These fires have nothing to do with a failure to clear fuel. Rather, this is thousands of square miles of chapparal and brush which burns every few decades, then grows back. It is largely inaccessible, and clearing it would not only be impossible but also would cause other problems, such as erosion.

The problem is that fools choose, and are permitted, to build in the midst of it.

Actually they are correct. Trees trap carbon. Logging the trees puts the carbon into homes that eventually go into the soil through land fills or other means. Letting them burn releases most of the carbon into the atmosphere as CO2. If the environs had half a brain they would support logging to save the planet and all. They don’t so they won’t.

I have been wondering about the origins of these fires. They seem to have started in many places at once in a short period of time. Has anyone seen any reportage or analysis regarding the direct causes of these fires?

I heard a reporter on Fox earlier today state that there were 3 separate sources for the fires and that there was evidence of arson.

I think she either said or implied that that information/opinion had come from a law enforcement source.

Could illegals be setting forest fires? They’re under more pressure in our society and have taken over the national parks and countryside.

The first couple of fires were reportedly caused by downed power lines, which no doubt fell due to the 70 mph Santa Ana winds. The winds hit suddenly across a broad area, which explains why several fires started simultaneously. This happens every fall in Southern California. We only had three inches of rain last year, and humidity is below 10%, so any spark instantly roars into a blaze. Arsonists know this.

Most of the homes that have been burned did not clear a 200 to 300 foot break around their homes. Those that have done so have been safer than those that did not.
I’ve lived out West and I own a fair sized plot of land where I presently live in the North East.
When I built my home, I made sure that the land around my home was cleared of trees at least 100 to 200 feet around the house.

It is not hard to imagine that someone willing to run the risk of wildfire by building or buying in an obvious fire zone might also be willing to risk not taking prudent measures.

Still, the misguided thread-starter here failed to realize that the author's contentions have nothing to do with the current brushfires, with the possible exception of those in forested Lake Arrowhead. Even there, though, there has been significant clearing due to the devastation caused by the pine bark beetle in recent years.
