lazy nativists are too busy wasting their time whining about other people's languages.

Yeah that's what made this country the most advanced and powerful in the world...a bunch of lazy nativists....(why do I bother replying to these childish rants?...I guess I don't suffer fools gladly ...)

"I had my own business back in Mexico, but I had to sell it when I came to the United States almost five years ago," he said in Spanish.

Here is one who obviously hasn't spoken English since he was seven. By the looks of it, he hasn't bothered to try now.

Headline is crap too. I thought this thread was going to be about Spanish as in Spain.

Please ping me when either of you have something of substance to say, and can carry on a civil, adult debate with anything other than churlishness and petulance.

I have spoken English since I was seven, but still prefer to have legal documents translated into Spanish. It is easier to understand, for me.

That makes no sense. Are you saying you don't really understand english?

That some people have a problem with Spanish being spoken at all by these recent immigrants bespeaks their problem with the 1st Amendment.

What a stretch of imagination. It's not about freedome of speech. It's about being able to commincate with each other. I can't communicate with them. They won't learn english yet I asked over and over to learn spanish. It's being forced on my children. I have no desire to learn spanish. None whatsover.

Why should my tax dollars go for something that is clearly dividing our country.

You hispanic advocates are insulting. You want everything translated for your benefit and you don't care how much it divides this country. I am insulted by the demand for my govt to provide you and your ilk everything in spanish.

Probably. Enough that they take jobs from Americans in that part of the state. A few years ago I was up there, and almost without exception some of the people I talked with (blacks and whites) despised the illegals. Same for some of the legal immigrants - in fact, they probably despised the illegals even more.

Some friends in the local Police and Sheriff's departments point out to huge increase in Latino gang symbols and the increase in crime going hand in hand. Many proponents of illegal immigration state that the immigrants are hard-working people attracted to the American Dream, but the PD will state that Mexico is allowing her criminals to opt for jail or America.

Sorry it doesn’t make sense to you, but that is how it is. I speak Spanish, English and Portuguese. I grew up speaking Spanish and Portuguese. I learned English from watching cartoons, and from school. Spanish is my native language and I find it easier to understand complicated things in Spanish.

I haven't seen anyone advocating a bi-lingual nation, and I certainly wouldn't want that. But there has to be some middle point between the Czarist-like pogroms against non-Northern Europeans which some here advocate for and their own worst irrational fears that English will be made illegal.

Here's an idea: Why not support the 1st Amendment and allow people to speak in any language they wish to? If you can't speak in Hrvatski Jezik or Gaeilge then don't. Speak the language you feel most comfortable with. But don't slam those who have abilities which you do not.

Feable attempt at abberating the meaning of the 1st Amendment. It's not freedom of speech that is the issue. It's being able to communicate in many situations.

Where I work, for example, the hispanic guys running the machines can't tell me what's wrong with them when I am called out to fix them. Why should I have to learn spanish to do my job? That is certainly not freedom of speech.

But there has to be some middle point between the Czarist-like pogroms against non-Northern Europeans which some here advocate for and their own worst irrational fears that English will be made illegal.

More disjointed and specious hyperbole. No one is suggesting the english will be made illegal. That's a classic strawman.

Again, it's about communicating. My grandparents never demanded or marched in the streets to have our govt. do things for them in Polish and German. How do you justify it for hispanics?

Ah, I'll remember that the next time someone mentions the loons at Aztlan as a justification for their own hoped-for pogrom against Hispanics.
