Who Restarted the Cold War?
Humanevents ^ | 10/19/07 | Patrick J. Buchanan

"Putin's Hostile Course," the lead editorial in The Washington Times of Oct. 18, began thus:

"Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit Moscow is just the latest sign that, more than 16 years after the collapse of Soviet communism, Moscow is gravitating toward Cold War behavior. The old Soviet obsession -- fighting American imperialism -- remains undiluted. ...

"(A)t virtually every turn, Mr. Putin and the Russian leadership appear to be doing their best in ways large and small to marginalize and embarrass the United States and undercut U.S. foreign policy interests."

Snip....

Missing from the prosecution's case, however, was the motive. Why has Putin's Russia turned hostile? Why is Putin mending fences with China, Iran and Syria? Why is Putin sending Bear bombers to the edge of American airspace? Why has Russia turned against America? For Putin's approval rating is three times that of George Bush. Who restarted the Cold War?

To answer that question, let us go back those 16 years.

Seems we have been picking a fight with Russia. Just how many enemies do we need? IMO our State Department policy toward Russia has been screwed up since Carter boycotted the Olympics.

Putin needs to be careful here...he’s picking friends for the short term and it will come back to bite him.

I think I dissagree with you. I am hesitant because there is more information here for me to digest than I currently know about it.

That said, I believe there is a significant political power grab going on in Russia. They are stearing away from capitalism. I question the motives. Like America, it could be as simple as a handful of power hungary politicians unfettered in a weak democracy.

More “blame America first” garbage from Lenora Fulani’s toady, Pat Buchanan.

Wow, now I get it. Pat’s become a blame America-Firster willing to side with Putin. Did he ever meet an authoritarian ruler he didn’t like? Nope. So Pat, who was once an anti-communist, is now a butt boy for Putin. I think his anti-communism was without principle; it just paid the bills then.

Putin picked the US as a friend of a new Russia, and W responded positively but the policy never changed on our side.

And the policy is faulty as it should be concentrating on the Islamists threat. Since the wall went down Russia ceased to be a threat. It baffles me why we take on a second front against Russia, when they could be of immense help against the jihad.

I thought some of you might want to read Buchanan’s most recent apologias for an anti-American thug. Buchanan’s a sad lad, poor fellow is as bitter as they come. The rejection of the American voters has turned him into a Benedict Arnold for our times.

Many said when the wall came down that this was all just a ruse and that we should expect the Russians to come back with a vengeance.

Looks like they were right.

You and the rest of the Patsies are the worst kinds of traitor: self-righteous ones.

Who Restarted the Cold War?

Given that Pat Buchanan wrote this piece, I'm guessing the Jews.

Get a clue. Putin is selling the nuclear technology to Iran that will make its nuclear weapons. Putin is selling air defense to Iran and Syria along with a myriad of other arms as both of those nations aid those who kill Americans. Putin is also selling large amounts of weapons to Chavez. But we should be kissing Putin’s bum like Pat Buchanan. Get real.

Best reply yet!!!

Strangely enough, I think he got through his whole apologia for the new Moscow strongman without mentioning the Jews. He must be taking his meds to control that monomania.

IMO , Pat is not siding with Putin, he's just making the case that W squandered an opportunity in accepting a new Russia, which will be needed if we intend to culturally survived.

The United States began moving NATO into Eastern Europe and then into former Soviet republics.

The US did not conquer these nations. Now that they were independent they requested admission to NATO. Does Pat think the Bear should have a permanent veto over the actions of its former subject states?

Who restarted the Cold War? Bush and the braying hegemonists he brought with him to power.

The Wall fell in 1989, 18 years ago. Bush has been president for 7 of those years. Why is it all his fault?

Putin was a KGB thug long before GWB was elected.

“Once KGB, always KGB”, the quote I heard 5 years ago from a Russian coworker, refering to Putin.

As promised, the Soviet Union is reawaking after “going to sleep” in 1991.

And Pat is old bitter fool.

Why is it all his fault?

He shares part of the blame. Bill gave them Bosnia and W now wants to give them Kosovo.
